Brilliant Photo Hazel. John looks great.

and would you believe I had a pang of reminiscence when I saw the upholstery fabric on John's Chair. My parents had their suite recovered in that pattern.

Lovely photograph Hazel! When do you go off for your holiday - I can't remember when or where you're going but I think it's with Connie!

Thank you so much everyone.:)

Izzy, our holiday is not until 18 October, it's a Rhone river cruise.:) Connie and I are looking forward to it very much.

John is well, though not often as alery as this. Even on bad days, he is clean and immaculately dressed. He has a good diet, and is kept comfortable.

I’ve had my problems with the home, documented on this thread, but I cannot fault the care.

John was a very sick man when he went in, almost two years ago. He was very sick for almost a year. If I had brought him home, as I wanted, I am convinced he would not have survived the series of infections he suffered. I could not possibly have given him the care he receives now, always two carers to give him personal attention, and a registered nurse present round the clock.

I did not give up. My life revolves now round making sure that John receives the care he needs and deserves, and is comfortable and happy. He has my love at all times.

Bringing him home to die would have been to give up.

Love to all,

Hi Hazel, John looks really well. :)

The fact that he is so well two years on from a devastating illness is testament to the care he receives both from the Home and from you. Just because we reach the realisation that our loved ones need more specialist care does not mean we stop being involved in their care.

Sorry there's no good news about the ring. Some years ago my sister had a break-in. Some months later she ran into the Police Officer who dealt with the case. "Did you ever hear anything about your break-in?" he asked. "No" she replied pointedly "DID YOU???"

A great photo of John and his grandson.

I know how much you really would love to have been able to take John home. But you loved him enough to realize that you could not give him the specialized care he requires. You're a realist and accept what is necessary. Not a common trait.

Love,

As predicted, today was not a good day for John, he never opened his eyes at all. And Joshua was camera-shy. But for the record, another cutie!

Joshua is lovely Hazel, a beautiful little boy.
No one would believe the two photos of John were taken on consecutive days.

Hello Hazel, Sylvia is so right in her observation:

No one would believe the two photos of John were taken on consecutive days

These differences in day to day have to be seen to be believed.

Hang on to the good days sweetheart.

Hello Hazel, your grandchildren look very bonny indeed. John looks great too. Although sleepy in the second picture, he is very obviously well looked after, and that is a great credit to you and your unstinting love.

I've changed the photo of John & Joshua, I got a much better one today. Although John still hs his eyes shut, Joshua is a bit less shy. Sadly, they're on their way home now.

I finally got to talk to CN today, following our trip to A&E (16th Oct. for the record).

The GP came out to see John on the Monday (Hurrah, I wasn't sure if he'd have bothered).

It appears John's heart is failing, and that is causing the swelling.

They're not giving him any meds at present, but are monitoring the situation, and will treat if there is any problem with his chest.

John's very sleepy, but smiling and cheerful when he is awake, so he doesn't appear to be in any discomfort. His right leg is still very swollen though.

Another notch down, I'm afraid.

Hazel,
I'm really sorry to hear that John isn't well. Is there not something they could do about his leg? But I guess the most important thing is that John doesn't appear to be uncomfortable.

((((HUGS))))

I'm feeling OK, Janet, thanks. I'm not as wound up as I was before my holiday, and I guess I was prepared for bad news.

They won't treat the oedema unless it becomes uncomfortable, Joanne, or unless he has fluid on his lungs. The heart failure means other organs may not function properly, but hopefully it won't come to that.

Thanks for caring.

Hello Hazel...

It's good to hear that John has been well cared for while you've been away...:)

As for the swollen leg...

We're moving into that territory too.

In our case it's Eric's left foot and ankle which are very puffy..heart failure has been ruled out for now..

But it is a symptom of immobility..and as you say..another downturn.

Hazel

Sorry to hear about John's swollen leg. I too walked the same path with my dad. I found a couple of things which helped. Firstly sitting with the leg raised whenever possible and secondly massaging the affected area with a very good moisturiser (Diprobase). That way, the skin was more flexible and less likely to "rip" due to the swelling.

Sending love to you both
