Just had a call from one of the specialist nurses, that have been going into the CH to assess Bernard, to say that he is retaining a very large amount of urine and his kidney function is impaired so they are sending him into hospital again as the bladder needs to be drained very carefully to avoid it collapsing, not something they want to do in the CH. She said he has deteriorated and is very confused. I'm quite relieved really as I have been very worried that it was the same thing as when he was in hospital a few weeks ago. He must be in so much discomfort, I hope it doesn't take too long to get the hospital transport sorted out.

Well poor chap had a catheter inserted and an enema as he was also very constipated, big relief all round I imagine. He was very calm about it, and seemed to realise that it was going to help him feel better. He is still in the emergency assessment unit, waiting for doctors to decide what happens next. xx

You are both really going through it aren't you. Hope they can get Bernard really sorted out at the hospital Jinx, this has been carrying on for such a long time you must be exhausted with the worry.
Love and a big hug, Es

Bernard has been sent back to the care home complete with catheter, which he'll have at least for a couple of weeks. He'll go to urology outpatients for further investigation. I guess that's better than him having to be in hospital for weeks. Just hope the CH can cope OK. xxx

What a difference yesterday evening, Bernard was so much brighter and talkative, not making sense, but taking an interest AND with the help of two carers walked very slowly from the sitting room to the dining room! I was beginning to think that after a week off his feet he might not be able to walk at all. We still have to wait for the urology outpatients appointment to see if the catheter is going to be a permanent fixture. Just hope he doesn't get another infection.

Scarlett thank you for the lovely cyber flowers and the red wine was the best!! xxxx

The progress was short-lived, Bernard is not able to stand again and they are back to using the hoist to transfer him. He is still taking antibiotics, but I think the present course has just about finished. He is still catheterised and I'm so worried about infections. I asked if they tested the urine when they empty the bag and was told there wasn't much point because it is stagnant so result could be misleading. Does anyone else have experience of normal procedure? He has also been signed off by the ACAT nurses, and is back under care of the district nurse for the catheter. No word of the urology outpatients appointment either. He is quite talkative and aware that the other people aren't 'quite right' as he put it. He does find the noises some of them make quite distressing.

I am also having a dilemma about Christmas Day. I feel I should have lunch with Bernard but I also want to be with my family as both daughters, partners and four little grandchildren will be together. We intend to visit in the morning and probably leave when they go to lunch, but I know it's going to be hard to leave him.

Nick was discharged from the hospital 6 weeks ago with a catheter Jinx. I was very worried about infections especially because he was discharged from the hospital with totally inadequate equipment to me, with no knowledge of how to manage it , and it took the District Nurses nearly 6 days to visit, despite daily phone calls from me begging for help:eek: However, he has survived and seems to be okay so don't worry too much. Important for him to keep drinking so hopefully the CH is seeing to this, but I would push the fluids as well when you're in there.

Hope you can find a compromise for Christmas Day, sounds like it's going to be hard for you whatever, but you have to balance Bernard's needs with your own, and if you can have a bit of normality you can be stronger for him.

Thank you for the reassurance Es, how hard for you to have to cope with that at home without adequate support, you poor love. It seems Bernard's mobility or lack of is at his choosing! He managed to walk using only his walking frame to the bathroom and back this evening, though to be fair he was exhausted when he got back to his chair. He's lost a lot of weight though and his trousers are slipping down as they don't put his belt on when he's dressing. I'll order some more jogging bottoms as they seem to stay up and he finds them comfortable. x

I got joggers for William in the last eighteen months of his life for the same reason. His trousers would no longer stay up. He used to wear braces, but with incontinence, it was all such a faff. He couldn't figure them out at all. He found the joggers very comfortable and warm too, which was a bonus.

Bernard's daughter and eldest grandson, 20, came to see him yesterday evening. Josh hadn't seen his grandad since the summer when he was still at home. I think they were both quite shocked by the deterioration. Nevertheless Bernard was still capable of flirting with the nurse and said he wanted her to stay so he could put his arm round her, seemed a bit put out when he realised I was sitting on the other side of him! There's life in the old dog yet it seems....
