Hi can anybody help with a bit of information? My relative is elderly and her partner has dementia. She is in I’ll health herself and is finding it increasingly difficult to care for him at home. She thinks she has to pay for any care he might be able to get at home- so for eg he needs help getting in and out of bed, washing and isn’t continent. She suffers win long term conditions that are limiting and is exhausted. Does the care available vary from area to area does anybody know? Can she get someone to come in to wash him etc change him get him out of or into bed for her as she is unable to lift him etc. Thanks.

She will have to contact Adult Social Services for a needs assessment and a Carers assessment for herself. They will financially assess her partner for a potential contribution for any care. She will not have to pay anything personally. If her partner's assets are under £14,250, he shouldn't have to pay anything. Between that and £23,250 there will be a part contribution. Over that amount they'll be considered a self founder and can arrange any care themselves. If they have joint accounts, half will be assessed as belonging to each.

This does vary from area to area - my Mum had to pay a contribution towards her carers (from her pension/benefits) even when she had assets well under the minimum limit.

This factsheet explains how to go about getting care needs / carers assessments from the local authority: https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/get-support/legal-financial/assessment-care-support-england#content-start

It will also be useful to make sure that they are getting all the benefits they are entitled to such as attendance allowance. You can download a Carer’s Guide here which is packed full of useful information for carers:

Hello @Informationinformation, you are welcome here and I hope you find the forum to be a friendly and supportive place.

I hope you have time to take a good look around the site as it is a goldmine for information. When I first joined I read old threads for information but then found the AS Publications list and the page where a post code search can be done to check for support services in ones own area. If you are interested in these, clicking the following links will take you there

https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/get-support/publications-factsheets-full-list

https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/find-support-near-you

You will see that there are Factsheets that will help with things like getting care needs assessments, deciding the level of care required and sorting out useful things like Wills, Power of Attorney etc., if any of that hasn't already been done.

Now that you have found us I hope you will keep posting as the membership has vast collective knowledge and experience.
