Who is responsible for dementia care?

Hi, My dad was diagnosed with vascular dementia a few years ago. He was living with my mum and they refused support with his condition. Sadly, my mum passed away and my sisters and I decided to move Dad to a care home near where I live (but several hundred miles from his home) . I wanted to find out who is responsible for helping with his dementia care/treatment? Would this be done through his new GP or is it a separate issue? I'd really like to get some more detailed information about his dementia/which stage he is at/how to help etc. I wanted to know who to approach about THIS so any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks

Welcome to TP. There's a useful factsheet here about vascular dementia which you may find helpful:https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/sites...loads/factsheet_what_is_vascular_dementia.pdf

Treatment/medication will be carried out by the GP but the local adult mental health team sometimes become involved if the GP feels it is necessary. Stages can vary from person to person and symptoms can fit more than one stage so it isn't necessarily a good thing to focus too much on what stage someone is at. It's also a good idea to build up a good relationship with the care home staff who will be used to dealing with various issues as they arise. This forum is also a great source of information so any questions, ask away, although you may get a better response if you start a new thread in the 'I care for a person with dementia' forum.

hello @Teslagirls
a warm welcome to TP
my condolences on losing your mum
I hope your dad is settling into his new home
I agree with Louise7, the local GP is now responsible for overseeing your dad's health and welfare - generally the home's residents will all be under the same GP, so have a chat with the home manager - I find that just having a quick chat with staff each time I visit has built relationships and they keep me fully up to date with how dad is
