There is no harm in saying he is on holiday at the moment but will see her on his return.

Why confuse her with the truth?

Soft lies are kindly in your situation.

I find this really hard too....mum is always asking about her 3 sisters and 4 brothers...they all died between 5 and 7 years ago (mum was the youngest) I used to tell her they were dead but now I try and skirt around it by saying they are on holiday/live a long way away/came to see her a few weeks ago/coming in a few days.....seems kinder than saying they're all dead..:(

I change the subject & say what your dad was like? Did he give you lots of kisses like this (& go on to kiss her) I bet he was a good dad to you, was you a naughty girl & he had to tell you of? …..all question then my mum drift of in to her own world & I bring up another conversation .

If mum bring up her brother or sister I ask question about how they interacted with each other .....(I do not use the word interacted with mum , but you undertand what I mean as in

Oh tell me what was she/he like.... Est
