"You don't think it mattered that the computer was on, do you!"

No more than it ever does which provided you don't get click happy means you are safe.

These scam calls simply rely on a certain proportion of people being with BT,TT, microsoft etc. There will be enough people who are to make the cold calls worth their while

We are with TPS but have been getting a lot of calls recently. Some automated and out of country calls, which TPS do not regulate, and some 'real' people who usually hang up fairly quickly when I mention TPS. Then there are the muppets who pretend they are working with TPS to stop cold calls..

Are you ex-directory? We're not on the public electoral register either.

Check whether your phone comes with a do not disturb feature. We effectively put all sales callers on silent by programming in numbers of friends and family and only letting their calls be heard. Works an absolute dream.

I've got the CPR one. Blinkin' brilliant thing. But do be warned, trying to stop scammers also means some normal calls can't get through. It then becomes a nightmare trying to set the programmer up.

BT do a special phone that blocks calls.

"...possibly along with other calls that are probably 'innocent', maybe important."

This can be a major problem when 'withheld' calls are blocked, you can't selectively block 'withheld' as they do not present a unique caller ID.

Most of the NHS, LA, Gov,.... present as 'withheld'. Some blocking systems ask the caller to release the CLID by using the 1470 prefix, some ask the caller to release the CLID leaving it up to the caller to decide how to do it, others just say 'sorry this person does not accept anonymous calls', in the last case you rely entirely on the caller having been trained what to do.

Yup. And all those services end up telling you they can't get through to you, which means you wait for a promised call all day, and it never comes. Guess who gets the blame? Well, it isn't the caller. Blocking calls is a specialised subject someone will be doing classes on some day, for a nice fee!

Sorry. Cynical. I've lived too long, hahahahahahaha!

Nitram, any chance I could ask you summink about Windows 10? Either PM or on that thread for it?

Sure, best on thread as others may find discussion of use.

A friend of mine used to say very nicely, 'Could you just hang on a minute?' Then she'd go and get the vacuum cleaner, plug it in and leave it roaring into the phone. Just saying...

Personally I would always just say 'no thanks' nicely enough to wretched sales calls. Daughter once had a holiday job in telesales - she lasted about a fortnight - as she said, it's not much fun being told to eff off all day long.

I try to be polite - as long as they are polite to me and take 'no' for an answer. If they try to tell me that I am stupid, don't understand what I am saying or what I might have done, I get a little less polite. Also exempt are people who are setting out, blatantly, to con me - my response to them varies from day to day.

I think the only answer if they persist is to put the phone down. It was actually quite interesting when daughter had her telesales job to hear the strategies. They had a script from which they were not allowed to deviate at all - and supervisors were listening in. For every objection anyone raised, there was a set answer they had to use - and there were umpteen of them, for every conceivable objection.

It was ages ago now, but IIRC she got the sack for deviating - it was something to do with management consultancy and she started saying straight off, 'PLEASE don't tell me to eff off' - or words to that effect.

Well my Call Barring serivice for Talk Talk is working a treat.
I'm getting tremendous satisfaction from dialling the given code and barring the last number. I am not in the directory but my number shows up on other people's phones so I am not technically ex-directory as my sister, who is ex-directory, shows as 'private caller'. Nearly barred her the other day!

I too refused to have my name on the public electoral roll.
I agree about 'real' people in call centres but most of mine are now on tape or silent calls but some can be very persistant and I often cannot understand what they are saying anyway! Reminds me of the Marigold Hotel!
