My mum keeps hoping her husband will 'return'

My stepfather is in a care home after my mum and I cared for him for 2 years.
My mum is obviously stressed at the changes to him and whenever he actually speaks (rare now) she gets very excited and says he is the person he used to be. She is obviously finding it all too much and I am trying to support her but I live 4 hours away. How can I help her?
