My dad was diagnosed with vascular dementia just over 2 weeks ag. However he had a bowel op in Feb 19 and had post op delirium so a CT scan was done that showed damage caused by vascular dementia but this was never shared with us.
two weeks ago he tripped and fell at home. Paramedics were called and it was suspected he may have had a stroke. So admitted to a and e, tests done and all clear. However they needed to test for UTI but he went into retention and catheter inserted. UTI test clear. He was very wobbly on his feet and at risk of falling (wasn’t like that a couple of days prior) so agreed discharge to intermediary care home for rehab and assessment as he lives alone.
After 2 days at IMC they wee still concerned re weakness in left side so re admitted to hospital for further tests for stroke. All of these have been clear but he seems to have had another UTI and has been v confused. After 10 days he has now been discharged back to IMC. I have spoken to the occupational therapist today and the person he described is not the man I knew 2 weeks ago. He cant even stand unaided, but just over 2 weeks ago walked unaided (no stick, frame etc) around Asda with me. He’s had a bowel accident and didn’t even mention it and apparently is just staring into space and not engaging with anyone. The OT couldn’t believe it when I explained how he was managing only 2 weeks ago with minimal support.
The communication from the hospital has been non existent (I’m in the process of addressing that) and with local lockdowns I haven’t been able to visit him in the hospital or care home.
The OT said they will give him a couple of days to re adjust and will then start assessing him to see how he can improve.
my mum had VD so I know that there can be sudden deterioraten but it was never like this.
Has anyone had a similar experience and did your loved one manage to improve
Thanks and sorry for the long post
