It been a while since I last visited the forum. My A is no better,. I asked for a Scan and the results that came throught were puzzling - can anyone throw a light. It seems that after 4/5 years since A began with memory loss, this scan shows NO shrinking of brain? so my doctor is trying to see if a tablet can be got for him. This will be the first tablet for the vascular dementa. apart from a colestrol one, one for BP and a 75 asprin.

Hello Luca

I am afraid that I cannot throw any light on your situation but it seems very positive that the scan shows no shrinkage of the brain.

I just really wanted to say "hello" and hope that you are well.

Hi Luca

It sounds to me as if A. has vascular dementia, with no Alzheimer's.

Vascular dementia can affect just one area of the brain, whereas AD usually shows up as general shrinkage -- although this may not show up at all for some time. Damage cause by VAD on the ither hand can usually be seen quite clearly, and this is why they do the scans.

These factsheets might help you:

As far as I know, there is no medication for VAD, apart from the ones A. is already on, to control the blood supply.
