I guess I am looking for support- my mom had a stroke in June 2023 she started to recover well but declined when we got her home- she had a seizure and on discharge from hospital she has moved into residential care- she finds communication difficult she mixes up words saying very random sentences and doesn’t know who we are most of the time. Doctors have said she almost certainly has onset of dementia- it is early days in the care home but she was settled and now is very distressed when we visit asking to go home

Hello and welcome to the site, sorry you have to find us on new year's day.
Personally I'd focus on the fact she's been ill with the stroke and still is in a "hospital" like place, not telling her she's in a carehome, can't go home until the doctors say so and on the plus side all the doctors and nurses are there to look after her 'til she gets better. Free food, heating and no bills to pay.
If it turns out she's self funding, does it matter you lied to her?
Given her circumstances very likely she would get her care funded by the local authority, but read up on that, agree to nothing and never sign anything.
There's a lot to read on the site here.
