Hi there,

My dad is feeling quite fed up and a ‘prisoner’ at home at times. Not being able to drive anymore is an issue and represents a huge loss of independence.

My dad is frustrated at not being able to do all the things he used to do.

At the moment he just stays at home with my mum but when she goes off to do something it triggers him into quite a bad mood and becomes quite difficult. We agreed that I would find some local activities for him to consider and then make a weekly plan.

It needs to be something that allows my mum a break, I can take him but it would be great if it was something he could do independently in a safe environment.

Any suggestions?

He is still fairly active and mobile, he used to be a director of health and safety, he is very intelligent and witty and humorous too! Thanks in advance

Does your dad like listening to music? @Springflowers123
My OH finds most music calming. She likes to conduct it!
Is he safe to do a little weeding in the garden?
Does he like doing puzzles - wordsearch/ sudoku/ etc?
Can you give hi a pile of old photos and ask him to put them in date order or person order or place order?
Unfortunately a PWD can be or become quite clinging, especially to OH.

How about men's shed if there is one local to your dad? Details here:

It may be worth checking here too for local activities/groups that may be suitable:

Thank you, I have heard of one nearby so will look in to it. Thanks also for the other link

He loves music! He puts things on YouTube and we enjoy going for a scenic drive with some nice music on.
the photo thing is a great idea, he likes to look back at photos and other things he has collected so that would be a nice activity.

Yes, it’s hard as my mum gets quiet frazzled and we don’t want her to get overwhelmed so trying to find things to benefit them both.

There is a dementia trained, companionship service in our area I have found, they are a driving service and can take clients out for a trip or even just socialise with them at home and I wonder if that might be useful.
