Ann - so sorry to hear this, been meaning to post since you posted on 30 but not time to write a long reply. Hugs. MIL may well respond to treatment with IV antibiotics. When my mum had pneumonia she wasn't too bad when she went in to hospital, much worse the next day as the infection took hold before the ABs kicked in and then the next day much better. Really good she has a nurse from the unit with her. Presume another one will take over as shifts change.

You never know what is going to happen with this wretched dementia do you?
Mum got pneumonia at the beginning of the year and I thought that would be the end, but she responded to the IV anti-biotics (despite constantly ripping out the canulla!). Then, a few weeks later she stopped eating and I was convinced it would be the end, but she has started eating again and shes still with us.

My crystal ball still hasnt turned up either....

Sending you hugs and warm wishes, Ann. Think the good food and trying to lose yourself are very good tactics.

Bless you all and thank you xxxx

Mil's still in the A&E unit waiting, I'm told, for a bed on MAU (Medical Assessment unit, I think) - not sure if they are going to park her there just whilst waiting for test results, or if she is going there while they are waiting for a bed on one of the specialist wards - her notes are between the dementia ward and A&E from the sound of it, and so its a little hard to speak to someone who knows exactly what is happening. I spoke to the staff who had just spent the last 2 hours with Mil, she apparently spent most of the time insisting he should be on his way back to Ireland, that he would miss the boat if he didn't hurry and was equally insistent in claiming he could catch the boat from the town centre if he was quick - so still as confused, though so far she hasn't kicked off. However, she has now been there for around 7 hours, so I suspect that if they don't settle her somewhere soon, they may be in for a rough few hours.

OH will probably phone once he gets home just after 9, if they don't contact us first - so just sit and wait, for now. xxxx

I'm so sorry to hear all this, Ann, what a thing to happen - for you all. All I can say is that, yet again, your MiL is mirroring exactly what happened with my mum, and we were quite convinced the end was close several times, long before she really reached that point. MiL sounds as if she has the same ability to bounce back from really serious situations, while the dementia makes everything surreal. That talking on and on for house, eyes closes, confabulating away with the fairies. Thinking of you and sending lots of virtual (((hugs and support))).

Oh Ann! It really is just one thing after another, isn't it??

I'm glad that MIL is where she needs to be, for the sake of her physical and mental health, and hope that whatever happens is quick (whether that be improvement or otherwise).

Your poor OH must be so worried and the situation at work won't be helping, it is something that none of you need right now. I guess there will be an element of guilt too - for wishing that the end would come quickly for MIL's sake, no matter how understandable and kind that wish is.

It's good that there will be a nurse from the ward with her throughout (that must play havoc with their duty rota!), I certainly found a lack of real understanding when I was in A+E with Mum and her condition is nowhere near as advanced as MIL's.

I hope you are able to get some sleep tonight and that the situation is clearer in the morning.

Huge (((((((hugs))))))) to you all xx

Morning all,

Just to quickly say thanks again for all the good wishes and support - you guys are absolute rocks xxxx

No news overnight, so assuming that means that she is at least no worse, and may even be better! She was in MAU and I'm also assuming she is still there, though to be honest, if they have moved her back to the dementia assesment unit or a diffferent ward overnight I wouldn't have expected them to phone us through the night just to let us know that. I'll be phoning at just after 8, but as we've heard nothing, I think it will be good news and she is probably fine . OH and I will go in to see her this morning - once we find out exactly where she is  I think that they would have put her on intravenous AB's overnight and that , as there don't seen to have been any emergencies, we will probably find her at least a little better. Slugsta, yep - I would imagine that having to provide 24/7 one to one for Mil is creating havoc with the rota's, and on that basis, I expect that they will try to get her back on the ward asap - however, they also have to think of her passing on the infection to other patients too, so maybe not? I guess all will be revealed when I phone!

Take care everyone, will update you with any news xxxxx

Hope you and OH got some sleep Ann? I hear your comment about the risk of sharing her infection but hopefully, for MiL's sake she will get back to the dementia ward as soon as practical.

Hope your day goes as well as possible. Any news re the job? Although I do wonder how you can focus on preparing for interview etc with all that's going on But as others have said, for many many reasons you must do things for "you", not just MiL and everyone else. Take care x

Just sending best wishes and support.

It must be a measure of how difficult mils behaviour is to manage - that she is getting one to one support. Would this be a good indicator for Continuing Care funding do you think?
In any case it does make you wonder how the powers that be think you have managed all this time.

Hoping some how that you have a better day today.

Wouldn't she have a nurse with her due to her section rather than her behaviour? Or us that chicken and egg?

I hope she improves and gets back to the unit as soon as possible. I hope you find where they put her as I've lost a parent due to lack of the left hand knowing what the right is doing.

Thinking of you.

If she's been sectioned she certainly should have one to one support. In mums nursing home a couple of the residents have agency carers who are with them all the time.

Hope all will be well as it is just nerve wracking when they have to go to hospital.

Ann, hope you got some sleep and that MIL gets improvement from the IV antibiotics. And that everything is as okay as it can possibly be, which is maybe asking too much, I know. :(

You and your DH are in my thoughts...

Hello all,

Not long back from visiting, she is still in MAU, where visiting hours are fixed. She has had a chest infection confirmed (big surprise!) has been on IV antibiotics, and is due more, likely to be there for a 'couple of days at least'. She is still rambling on, introduced her accompanying nurse as 'she's the daughter of that man you work with', and called her by our daughters name for most of the visit. We had tales of her going to the doctor last night, who then put her in hospital for bed rest. She wanted to go for a cigarette, saying that Shirley had 'gone halves' on a pack of 10 with her, because '1 and six' is as much as she can afford, and had apparently given the last doctor she saw a tale of how she ended up in hospital because she fell over whilst chasing a lorry! There was a tale about her Mother having cataracts that were 'all in a line and squiggly', which she got after Mil had fallen and bumped her head (?). She was also rather concerned that the flourescent lighting strips were givng out so much heat that OH's head would get burnt. Still convinced that she is in Ireland, but not in the hospital in Limerick, she is in a little hospital with just 'this one ward'. She commented that she wasn't as old as the nurse sitting with her (who looked to be in her early 30's at most) saying that she thought she herself was 'only 22 next birthday'. She's actually quite flushed - which is an improvement on the grey tint of yesterday - but her chest sounds far worse than I have ever heard it before, really raspy and at times as though its gurgling almost :( She's apparently been very tired and has hardly wanted to move from the bed - the nurse from the dementia ward said it was such a difference from her usual 'charging round everywhere'.

Apparently hospital policy says that all sectioned patients must have 24 hour support from the dementia ward staff - aside from sitting with her and being on stand by to deal with any wandering or outbursts, they also take care of all personal care when its needed.

Meanwhile, a recorded delivery letter got sent off to youngests' school this morning, starting a formal complaints procedure - could so do without having to deal with it, but its not something I can let 'go by'. CV is done, and will go into the school where I'm hoping to work this week, well in time for me to hopefully get an invitation to interview, and OH - who is overly optimistic about my chances of getting the job - insisted on taking me out and buying me what he termed 'suitable work clothes' . I actually hate clothes shopping with a passion, but as I don't think my occasional maxi dress and otherwise usual attire of jeans and sweatshirts/t shirts will quite fit the bill, for that or any other job I apply for, I guess it was a good idea. Extremely annoyed to later find that the size labels on two of the garments were completely different to the sizes on the hangers, so I'm going to have to make a return trip!

Its still sit and wait, where Mil is concerned. Neither OH nor I have ever seen her quite this poorly with a chest infection before, so we are worried, I admit.

Thanks again for all the support - it does help so much xxxx
