We have really enjoyed the past few days with lots of laughs especially at our Tuesday group this morning when Pauline was sparkling doing bits of craft work and winning at domino’s, which always pleases her. As usual while driving home she mentioned several times how far away it is from home and how long it takes (20 mins) but not complaint at all. When we arrived home in the sunshine and after I had parked up she stood looking towards the house roof so I asked if all was ok and her answer was certainly unexpected. “What’s behind those windows up there/“ I replied Bedroom and box room/office and she looked very thoughtful and went on, “I thought as much but I’ve been wondering. So one is our bedroom.” Nothing untoward of course but another marker of decline and change. This was accentuated as, after watching her Classic Corries this afternoon and then I played the latest one from last night that we missed and wow! I had to stop it as she seemed almost frightened trying to deal with it being 20 years apart. Fine since and watching Tipping Point quite happily. Hmm

I am pleased to hear your sunny plateau is continuing @Agzy . You are very finely tuned into Pauline and notice these little declines, but keep looking at the bigger picture, which is set fair at the moment. It’s good to share these things though. Hope tomorrow goes well.

@Agzy , you are inspirational. The dementia journey is a difficult one but you look after Pauline so well. I love the way you adapt to her needs and moods. Enjoy these good days.

Not so pleasant this morning as it is Thursday, Daycare day, and her mood transmits her annoyance as she had breakfast and then she headed for the toilet. It took a while for me to realise she had taken a while and so I headed upstairs to find she had had an accident and underclothes and trousers on the floor as she stood trying to clean herself totally ignoring the alarm button to alert me. Got her cleaned and sorted but it was heartbreaking to see her distress and tears of embarrassment . I have a doctors appointment this morning as well so things could prove awkward.

Amazing the effect of music has. Pauline has no idea who ‘The Eagles’ are nor their music but I like them and, as the “Ultimate Eagles” were appearing at our local theatre, I booked us tickets. I did so expecting her to want to leave early and the complaints prior to arrival did not bode well but boy did she enjoy herself! Foot tapping, mouthing words trying to sing along and full of praise at the interval. The only upset was when a lady behind us sneezed and Pauline took great offence as her coat, “was covered in slime” So into the washing machine it went as soon as we got home. An amazing night all round and an eye opener too ❤️.

As family and freinds share their holiday plans on social media my wanderlust instincts have started and I know that if I am to ever see my Canadian cousins again it really should be this year and during school holiday time so my daughter can travel with me. The problem is - respite care! I know Pauline will refuse and her sons cannot/will not be able or willing to provide sufficient care at home for her so a major quandary for me. Late August or early September are my prefered months but her eldest has advised he will be away on holiday himself ‘around about then.’ How do others in similar circumstances manage I wonder?

Oh @Agzy
I think many abandon their dreams 😢 but others fight and hold their resolve. I remember a lady here last year who booked to go to Greece and just told the LA she was going and they needed to sort care….which they did!

I think for you it depends on where you draw that line. You could tell her sons that you will be away for these dates and alternative care needs arranging……also the local authority….they legally cannot just leave Pauline, they will do something. You are overdue and entitled to a holiday. You will need to be firm, no negotiating, you’re off!

As you’ve also shared this could well be needed in an emergency for your own health anyway……so to have a practice run is no bad thing.

My motto in life is ‘no regrets’ for each of us that will look differently……but having had dementia in life my other motto is now Seize the Day!

we stand with you whatever decision you make!

Thank you @sdmhred, I like the idea of a trial run as to be honest my health issues are of some concern looking forward and so a valid point As is “seize the day!”

Pin him down for dates.Or alternatively book the dates that suit you and tell him you’re going

You must go! Enjoy a holiday with your daughter @Agzy . You have talked about this Canadian dream before, don’t let it stay a dream. All went well when you went away before, so book and go. Sometimes you have to put yourself first. Who knows what the future holds for you, or any of us. Do seize the day!
