He has Downs and has suffered eight years of dementia starting slowly with hiding things and emptying cupboards and shelves, stacking carrier bags full of clothes in the corners, leading up to sun downing with all its moods, the shouting and screaming all night, constant pacing wild with dementia, exhaustion, scary hallucinations etc. etc . He went into hospital November last with an infection and cried or screamed most of the 4 weeks he was there. Again in February he went into hospital for a few days. He had been having trouble walking late last year, forgetting how to move forward. The infection in November took its toll and he doesn't walk now. He has been battling with trying to move his body and legs since, and with other infections and bed sores, he is slowly winning. He is nearly 60 years old and has reverted to an infants needs, doubly incontinent and has to be washed and fed. He seems not to be able to remember how to use his arms or hands most of the time. But now, we have had calm for the last month, beaming toothless smiles and lots of affection, he's sleeping mostly at night with naps during the day. Still the odd mood, bad night, and some physical ailments but more content and relaxed. More alert mostly, with his cheeky sense of humour always at hand. It is lovely to see him happy again and the black moods gone for now. Even his hallucination are friendly and sometimes beautiful (he says). How long will it last? Has anyone else been through this phase after so many years of suffering?

What a rollercoaster! Yes other people have posted messages about huge swings of behaviour. It is awful to witness and be unable to help.

Best wishes to you all and the loved one you are caring for.

hi @bmca
I'm glad the last while has been calmer for all
not really sure there are phases as such that can be predicted in any way, with my dad things could be settled then change and change about
enjoy the happy times, they mean so much
