Should he be told

Hi , my dad has had Alzheimer’s for 7 years now and my mum has been his main carer.
Sadly my mum is very poorly and only has days left . My dads still at home and mum has just gone into a hospice .
My question is : do we try and explain the situation to my dad ? I am not sure how much he will understand and if we do explain to him how I’ll she is will he be fretting ?
I feel we should explain the situation to him . My dad lost his speech a couple of years ago so this makes it more difficult for him to express himself.
Has anyone else been in this situation?
