Hi All
My name is Abigail.

I pray that the God's grace will abound on all those suffering from this disease and the families who care for them.

My mother in law, she passed away in 2017 who suffered from vascular dementia for five years.
Thankfully, we were able to look after her under our roof and it was the most blessed time for our family.
My children still have many happy memories of their grandparents despite of grandmother's dementia symptoms.

Now 7 years later my husband is 67 years old and was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's and blood cancer.
I can't determine what stage he is currently in, but he has had memory problems for a long time, and now he is repeating the same questions and remembering things that are different from the facts. After consulting with a specialist in July of last year 2023, it is believed that his condition may have started several years ago.

The question here is that the situation we are in now is that we need to proceed with a large-scale plan such as house repairs, but we cannot proceed because he has to participate in everything and make decisions but he couldn't remember things.
In his condition, would it be a burden for him to proceed with these things?
We cannot move out of this house because he wouldn't.

Don't know what to do with practical needs for the family and to deal with his conditions.
This time, I have to look after him by myself without any help at the moment.
Looking forward to hearing from you

Hello @NAWE and welcome to the Dementia Support Forum. First of all I am sorry to read of your husband's diagnosis at such a young age, this must be hard for you both.

You have not said why you need to carry out the house repairs, if this is to make the house safer for your husband I would suggest that you go ahead with these repairs to ensure your husbands safety. I had to do something similar regarding our bathroom a couple of years ago and my husband coped will when the work was going on.

You also say that you do not have any help at present, if you have not already done so it might be an idea to contact your local adult social services to arrange a needs assessment for your husband and a carers assessment for yourself. I have attached a link below which may be useful to you.

Please keep posting and let us know if you have any other queries.

Also if your husband has not appointed an LPA(lasting power of attorney) now is the time to consider it.
