Would you like to contribute quotes to the SCIE website on dementia, to remind care staff what their job is really about? SCIE (Social Care Institute for Excellence) are responsible for producing guidance and information for social care staff. They are producing a website about dementia for care staff and their managers.

They would like to include quotes from people with dementia and their carers. They hope this will help to remind care staff that their work is about supporting individuals, not just carrying out tasks.

The website will be split into different sections, including:
· Getting to know the person with dementia – understanding the person.
· Eating well
· Difficult situations – helpful ways of managing situations that are difficult for the person with dementia and/or for the person supporting them
· Meaningful activities – finding out what the person is interested in and wishes to do, continued involvement in everyday tasks
· The environment – making the surroundings a good place to be, using the environment to make life more interesting and to help avoid difficult situations

SCIE would like to include short quotes that covered the following topics:
· Why it is important to get to know the person with dementia or what difference it can make to do so.
· Why it is important for the person with dementia to eat well, why it might be difficult and what difference the right approach can make
· Why handling difficult situations well is important, and what difference the right approach can make
· Why activity and occupation is so important, and what difference it can make to someone’s life
· What difficulties the environment can create, and what the right environment might look like

Please email any quotes of one or two sentences to include in the website to ssharp@alzheimers.org.uk I think this is a good opportunity to remind dementia care staff that the wishes and views of individuals they are supporting must be at the centre of their work.
