Painkillers - what is their effect on memory?

My partner has recently been diagnosed as having early-stage dementia or Alzheimer's. Following an accident requiring major surgery, she has been taking strong painkillers for 6 years. I understand that these can have a detrimental effect on memory and am wondering whether any work has been done on determining the effect they may have?
The recent tests did not seem to take this into account.
I'm wondering also whether there are any research facilities or 'centres of excellence' for dementia evaluation in the south of England, outside London...?

You have a specific interest.
You might be better searching for 'centres of excellence' on analgesia.

Hi ancien

I have been thinking too about the effect of pain and or pain killers on the brain and memory. In my experience having had pain and pain killers regularly following surgery for the past 6 months my brain feels fuzzy. I feel that the pain stops me thinking straight or maybe I can't be bothered to make the effort. I will explore the internet to see what I can find.
