Hi. My mother is 76 years old and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Dementia yesterday. She's in Stage 4 or 5. I'm 43, and any help would be appreciated. She is my carer as I have Bipolar disorder, epilepsy, OCD and depression. We're both devastated by the news, although it was suspected for some time. Thanks.

Am I in the right place? Getting no replies.

Hi everyone. Well this is my 4th post, I joined today, but can't see any replies. (I'm not used to this app yet so please help me out.) My 78 year old mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Dementia yesterday, I'm 43, live with her, and she is my carer as I have bipolar disorder, epilepsy and depression. Her condition was suspected some time ago, she's in stage 4 - 5 and just started a new medication this morning to help with it. I really need help please.

Hi Susan and welcome to Talking Point.

I'm wondering if you are somewhere other than the UK? I see that the posts you have made started at 12:45 PM UK time and since we are a UK based forum, it can be pretty quiet overnight.

Hang on- I'm sure you will get replies tomorrow when people wake up.

Hi Susan,

I am so sorry your mum has had this diagnosis and know how devastating this can feel.

Plenty of people on this forum, with more experience than me, will give you good practical advice about what help you can get and what arrangements you can make to help prepare for the future.

Please remember , your mum hasn't changed overnight because of the diagnosis. She is still the same person she was yesterday. I don't know how old she is or how bad her symptoms are but she may have a good quality of life for a long time to come.

Sending you a big ((((((hug)))))

Thanks brambles. My mum is in Stage 4-5 of Alzheimer's Dementia. She is 78.

Hi again Susan,

I hope you have had some sleep since your early morning post.
My mum is 91, so much older than yours , but I still took the diagnosis hard. However 2 years down the line , she is still managing at home. Still has good days. Still gets a lot of pleasure out of life.

Do you have any support?

I live with my Mum. We get in home cleaning and gardening/lawn done. My mother is my full time carer, as I have bipolar disorder, depression and epilepsy, even though I'm 43. As you can imagine this makes things very difficult. Her specialist and GP are going to organize more help, like cooked meals for us, counseling etc. Susan.

Hi Susan,
Sorry you needed to find us. Certainly you can get support on talking point, but can you let us know what sort of advice you need exactly?

There are a few Australians on tp,so with luck you may get them to respond as well

To be honest I don't know fully what I want, it's like a bad dream. All I want is my healthy Mother here. I'm absolutely devastated. Not coping well at all.

I know, that sounds silly. I would like information on Alzheimer's Dementia and just people to talk with please.

Hello and welcome to Talking Point.

There's a full list of factsheets here

https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/site/...D=200137&_ga=1.103036871.671365601.1466787328

Some of them refer specifically to the UK system, but if you have any questions, please just ask because as angelface says, there are Australian members posting here too.

As for needing people to talk to, I'm glad you've found us. You can offload your fears and worries on TP without judgment, as many of us have been in that scary place you are right now. Be assured, we're all holding your hand, even half a world away :)

Hi! Susan,

My dad was diagnosed earlier this year with mild on-set alzheimers and we both felt quite depressed for a few days but with time we realised that life does not stop with alzheimers and six months on we are learning to live with it. I have also lived with OCD since I was a teenager and with dad's diagnosis I told myself that I will put up a bigger fight against my OCD! That aside you will also see that with the diagnosis at least you can start to plan how you can care for your mum rather than carrying on knowing that something is wrong and nothing is being done.

Give yourselves sometime to get used to the medicine and keep using this space and your local alzheimers society for advice. Time will tell you what you need and also you must contact your local CAB for details about any benefits.

Good luck

MaNaAk
