Hi, little nervous posting so bare with me.
My grandmother has recently (6weeks) been in a care home. In those 6 weeks we have seen a vast change in her. She is becoming violent to staff in the evening (I don't have details of possible triggers, but usually happens around bed time). Last night I received a call from the police to advise that my gran had gone missing from the home. They had units out looking for her, including a drone. She isn't particularly able bodied so I left work early (9.20pm) to look for her. I called my Aunt who is NOK and has POA. She had no knowledge of this, the home hadn't contacted her. I'm not sure why the police rang me first or how they have my number for her. Anyway, 2 hours of searching and we found her. She was hiding not far from the home, across a busy street, hiding in a Bush. She stated she was following a man who looked suspicious (there's workman at the home), and knew he was going to harm her daughter, so she was following to protect her daughter. She then stayed in the Bush to observe. She was found clutching leaves and litter in her hand, she stated this was evidence she was collecting. We got her back and warmed up. It transpires she had gotten out because the key coded kitchen door was unlocked. The door which leads to outside from the is just a turn key, which she can manage.
The manager doesn't seem to be accepting any responsibility for this lack of care, instead she is pretty much stating the violent outbursts are too intense and therefore she needs to go to a progressed dementia wing (they have one at the back of the home). We are waiting on a UTI test to rule this out.
I'm not sure what to do. Sorry that was lengthy

I'm so sorry, that must have been very scary for both you and your grandma.

It sounds to me like your grandma is sundowning (very common in dementia) and that the care home does not know how to handle it

I would say that she needs to either move to the specialist dementia area, or that she needs a different care home that is properly secure and staffed by people who are properly trained and experienced in dementia care.
