Hi
Does anyone have any tips/advice/previous experience for getting someone (my mum) seen by a dentist in her care home for assessment for new dentures (in Edinburgh)? I appreciate cut backs and the lack of NHS dentists generally available but am so frustrated that mum isn’t seen as any priority and have been all round the houses trying to facilitate an appointment for her. (She has vascular dementia). The carers stopped putting her dentures back in around a couple of months ago as mum had lost weight and they said they’re too big.

The NHS Community Dental Service (CDS) provides treatment for people who are unable to access NHS General Dental Services (GDS). For example:

  • Only specialist CDS services are appropriate if someone has special needs (mental health problems, a physical disability, etc.).
  • In some areas, there may be few General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) providing NHS treatment.
  • Someone needing dental services may be resident in long-stay care.
