Dad becoming more aggressive

Hi, my 89 yo dad has had dementia for the past few years but in the last month or so we have noticed he is becoming more argumentative and aggressive. Has anyone else had experience of this as not sure what to do at this stage.
He is still currently at home, living with my mum and brother, I am only 5 minutes away so as a family there is always someone who can look after him but due to the aggression it is becoming increasingly difficult. Whilst I am not considering a care home at the moment I am unsure of what type of home care is available for this or what would be best. Thanks

It is totally usual for people with dementia to become aggressive and act out of character. I would think the fact that their world has changed beyond their recognition and understanding is very frightened and frustrating. Also any kind of infection but especially UTIs can make this behaviour so much worse so this needs to be checked by the GP asap.
If this behaviour does escalate then as a family you may need to consider residential care for everyone’s well being and if that is the case then you will have to be totally honest about your dads behaviour to prevent a placement failing. No all homes are prepared to manage abusive behaviour even if they state they are dementia specialists or EMI homes.
Remember this is dementia and not your dad. X

Hello @Iwanljones and firstly welcome to this friendly and supportive forum. There is a lot of shared experience of dementia to be found here, so I am glad you have found us.

I am sorry to read about your Dad and his increasing aggression. It's tough for sure, but it sounds like you as a family are doing your best at the moment to keep him at home. Making the decision to move a parent into a care home is an extremely hard decision, but when the time comes, you will be doing it in his best interests to keep him safe and well cared for 24/7.
What you describe at the moment will most certainly become unsustainable in the longer term.
This link may help with information about care home accommodation: It's best to be prepared with somewhere in mind before the actual need arises. Wishing you all the best.
