Sumi has just told me that I’ve had an extremely bad past three days but the fact is that I don’t even remember any of it or where the past few days have gone and even thought that today was Friday! Sumi said that I spent time at the computer typing but typing what I have no idea? And can’t even find any records of what I typed in my files, which to say is scary would be an understatement, but this is something ‘that of late’ I’ve been getting extremely concerned about as unlike the majority of people with dementia at home I don’t have anybody out here with adequate English that can proof read and edit whatever I’ve written.
Apparently I’ve been wondering around in a complete daze and kept asking Sumi “What am I doing, Where are we going” my insomnia has been very bad as well and Sumi said I’ve been awake, up, and dressed by 1am each night and when I did sleep it was only for short periods ‘cat naps’ which caused me to have horrendous nightmares, Sumi said she has no idea as to what caused the sudden deterioration and frantic confusion although has since said it might have had something to do with all the tremendous noise outside the house this past week from local wedding ceremonies!

Fortunately I have a hospital appointment tomorrow for a complete check up, scans, blood tests, and appraisal so will see what the doctor and specialist have to say… then I have my eyes checked again as my eye sight is getting very bad it’s as though I have a constant haze in them with a strange aching, and burning sensation which is very irritating all the time, the last time I went which was towards the end of last year the eye specialist said nothing could be done to improve my sight and that not even an operation or new glasses would be of any use, the fact is that my eyesight is deteriorating due to the Dementia and Diabetes, so now I need to go to the eye clinic once a month for check up’s and get some medication that “Might!” delay my loss of sight!

Barry, sorry to hear you've been having such a rough time. I hope that your doctors can do something to help you feel better and have a solution for your eyesight.

I have a problem with dry, itchy, achy eyes. I have drops (over the counter) which I use to lubricate my eyes a few times a day. I always start my day with my drops and sometimes I only need the morning and bedtime drops. Why don't you ask about something to at least alleviate the pain and irritation. My sight can be hazy also.

Dear Barry,

I am so sorry to hear that you have had a dreadful few days. By the way you have written your post on here I can only assume that you are already on the mend so to speak. You have always stated that noise can cause very bad confusion, irritation and disorientation and therefore it could be highly probable that the recent local wedding celebrations have contributed to how you have been. It is certainly worth mentioning at the hospital when you go. I remember how these things affected Alan.

There have been some amazing break-throughs in eye treatment over the past couple of years in this part of the world. It might be worth checking to see whether these break-throughs might benefit you. Wishing you luck with this.

Love to you and Sumi

Eye Issues

Hello to you all!
By way of brief introduction, my mother 87 has Alzheimers and I care for her.
Skimming through your posts I came across this one by Barry, about eye problems, which made me take notice:
my eye sight is getting very bad it’s as though I have a constant haze in them with a strange aching, and burning sensation which is very irritating all the time

Mum constantly complains about sore eyes....... and I take it none too seriously. She has always had 'dry eyes' and has drops to put in them, which give some relief. Also she seems to get conjunctivitis regularly, which the doctor puts down to her age.

May I ask you insiders whether painful eyes could be a side effect of dementia?
Thank you for reading this and I wish you all a satisfying day! Greetings from France, Big Effort

Hi again Effort
My own eye sight has got far worse since I posted this thread and I hace to got to the eye specalist evry month for medication and drops that seem to be helping, but he again said that nothing can be done to improve my eyesight as it caused by my dementia... maybe you should take your mother to the eye clinic for a eye test and check up...
Best wishes

Just read your post Barry. Thank you so much for sharing your experience it has been so much help to me (and I'm sure other) in caring for my Dad.
Dad has an eye appointment on Thursday and I really don't think they understand the impact his dementia has on his sight.

Take care

Thank you for your reply Polly
Yes any type of Dementia can have an affect on a persons eye sight, I went to a specalist and in fact besides my doctor was also one of the first people to notice I had Dementia after a full eye test,

Dear Barry,
Thank you for this special insight from one who knows. Mum complains constantly about her eyes, dry eyes and discomfort. I have never even considered making a connection between vision and dementia. You gifted us both that, and I shall see what the specialists can do for her.

It may please you to know that your luscious photos of cakes and bread prompted me to bake Irish soda bread yesterday. Just 10 minutes of labour produced a loaf flavoured by bacon, herbs and walnuts, and a second flavoured with cherries and apricots. The Irish would not recognise what I do to their ancient recipe, but that is what is in season here, so my husband will savour them today.

Keep in touch, Barry-in-Indonesia. I watched clouds here as I lay in the garden enjoying the sunset last night. Are you up for a new You-tube video? The essence of Barry in his landscape?

Be well Barry, thinking of you and sending you healing from afar! Big Effort

No problem, Best Guy!
Not kind words, sir, but heartfelt ones. It is so important to have people with dementia articulating, as they know better than all of us carers what it's like.

As you are so articulate, and also computer competent, why not start an online diary of what life is like with the dreaded dementia? This would be helpful as we, on the outside, can just guess or imagine.

I have a friend who suffered a severe stroke, an extremely physical man, young, and his life as it stood is over. He is so courageous, and manages better than his wife to deal with the huge impact of immobility. I am encouraging him to write notes and eventually a small book, so as to help and guide fellow stroke victims. He doesn't like writing, but when he does produce something it is funny, intense, and meaningful. I know that anyone suffering a stroke involving paralysis will find it useful.

So, Barry, watch your clouds, bake more goodies, and can you tell us what dementia is like from the inside? No pressure, mind you, just an idea.

Be well and talk soon! Big Effort in France
