Hello everyone,

I'm a Carer of a 55 year old Gentleman, who suffers with Dementia.
He is one of the sad cases, in which his family no longer wish to see him, and leave absolutely all his care, to the nursing home.
I am a Key worker for this gentleman, and I'm looking for some clothing, specifically trousers to help with his day to day life.

Let me explain what I'm looking for...

This Gentleman, has no use of his legs, and he does not weight bare, ha also has a permanently dislocated arm from the shoulder, which he has no control over.
Having said all of this he is still a very determined and very mobile man.
He gets around mobilising on his bottom and puts most of his weight on his 1 arm and his legs.
As you can imagine these areas, including the bottom get extremely sore.
I'm wanting to find some Jogging bottoms or fleece type trousers that he can wear and which have padding on the bottom area to help protect him further.
I've looked everywhere, and I cannot find any such clothing, except bicycle wear and work trousers ( which don't have padded bottoms).

I'm at a loss as to where to find anything remotely like these, could someone please point me in the right direction.

Thank you.

How about buying something from a ski shop? They might have some kind of strong padded trousers? There also might be something in a shop that specialises in clothing for climbing up mountains which would be v robust. Only thing is that this stuff might be a bit too warm. Still, worth a look I think.

If not what about buying some ordinary fleece trousers and having them adapted with extra padding by a local dressmaker/tailor?

Hi there,

This may sound strange but have you looked at clothing for amputees. I only say this as people who have limbs amputated at the knee very often get about on their bottoms if not using prosthetics. May be worth a google?

Hey Sharon thanks for the reply,

I've taken a look, at there are some very unique trousers adaptations to help various kinds of people with amputations. Alas, I'm not entirely sure if I'm looking in the wrong place, but I've still not found any trousers with some substantial padding in the buttox region.

I'll keep looking though... Thank you.

Hey pippop thanks for the reply,

This is probably what I'll be forced to do, I'm afraid to say it, but each resident only gets £30 per week allowance that the key workers are able to withdraw. So my options are very limited.
Out of this £30 we need to allocate some amount towards toiletries and hygiene supplies.
So I think the best option would be to obtain some fleece joggy bottoms, and get them adapted with some padding from a tailor.
Doubled up with the fact this particular gentleman is incontinent, I don't think it would be wise to go for the more expensive kind of trousers, and even those have a lack of padding in the buttox region.

Thank you for your help.

Try Lovemybubbles.com, for thr men on the side menu. I've had a quick flick on google as I was interested to see what could be found. They have padded pants for men (front and back ;-) ).

Not sure how much they are but they have some with removable pads, the pants are skin tight though so don't know if that will be practical.

Scrap that one then, they are American and quite expensive. By the time your paid shipping it will cost a fortune.

What about either making something or do you know a seamstress at all? They could maybe see something into the trousers at little cost. Maybe some thinnish foam sown into some material then into the trousers?

I can only second kingmidas1962's message. I think you're truly a saint for being so concerned about this one gentleman. 55 is a terrifyingly young age for someone to be suffering from dementia and being abandoned by his family. To have someone like you to look out for him is a blessing and a reassurance, amongst all the horror stories, that this kind of carer does exist. Thank you.

Hi, what about bike shorts under the trousers? My husband is a mad bike rider and the shorts have generous foam padding in the bottom and groin area. The rest is a very stretchy Lycra. They are not cheap but may be a simpler and cheaper option than tailoring pants. It would mean an extra layer of clothing but I have no other ideas.

Hope you get it sorted.
