Regularly falling out of chair

Hi, I have not been on here for ages and having read over my first posts things have changed a lot since I first joined

My dad now has advanced dementia, he no longer recognises me. He was a bit cross and very loud today.
Dad recently had a fall and broke his hip. That all seems fine but after just a day back in the CH he was back in hospital as he wasn't eating or drinking.

He is now back at his CH again but he keeps sliding out of his armchair. It is quite an upright armchair and he is just sliding out onto the floor. But they have had to have the doctor check him over and today they had to call the paramedics as he banged his head and cut himself.

The carers have said that the OT is coming to assess him and may recommend a reclining chair. However I am thinking that it might take ages before he is assessed and after the incident today, the third in three days I have decided to just get him a new chair.

Does anyone have any recommendations of what to get? The CH have said it needs to be fire retardant and have a brake if it is on wheels but I don't really know where to start. If I get him one that is easy to clean will it be too slippery like his armchair?

Any recommendations or tips gratefully received

Dad was the same, he lived at home but it was dangerous, he nearly fell into the fire at one point. I got him reassessed by the OT lady and she made a request for a special chair for Dad with the PCT panel who passed it... it was fully funded

The OT, the Rep and I had a meeting at the house and they did lots of measuring and tested a couple to see which was the best for dad.

It took a few weeks to get it delivered, but it worked marvelously, no more falls, lots of side and back support, tilting the chair back stopped the slipping, also, no more pressure sores.

When Dad passed away, the chair was given back to stores so it can help someone else

My FIL sits in a reclining chair at his care home. This was done original as he was lets just say 'lively' and there was a worry that he would fall when rushing around and hurt himself (could not get up from the recliner).

He is now in an advanced stage of AZ and the recliner together with special pillows keep him comfortable but not directly upright which seems to work very well.

There are companies which specialise in chairs for people who have special needs, and the OT's are usually able to put you in touch with them. Alternatively if you have a local independent living centre nearby they may also be able to help, and have examples you can look at.

There are very good waterproof material now that they use on chair covers, which are nothing like plastic ones and really comfortable for people to sit in.

I have also found that recliner chairs are really helpful, best to get a manually opperated one in case of power cuts, but they do help as someone is getting more frail.

I have also known in the past non slip chair seat slides which only work to slide backwards, which can help, also check that he is not wearing clothes which are slippery.

Hopefully the OT will come up with solutions.

A long time ago I remember reading on here about a non slip sheet/thingy to stop a person sliding down/off the chair
I am thinking something like this might help till a suitable chair is sourced

Maybe your local disability equipment store, the alzheimer's society , age concern or the homes manager would know about them

I am going to have a search on here, if others would to i'd be grateful


what I am thinking is , if you could get one then you could wait till a suitable chair was provided by the OT for your dad

I am an occupational therapist and have some good experience working with people who fall out of their chairs.
You might be able to find a private OT to assess the need and then the OT will have advice on what chair to get and what companies to contact (some companies are not reputable but some work with the OT's and often give discounts).
this would be your quickest option.

My husband had to be taken from a recliner chair because he wouldn`t be still, so his legs slid over the leg support and I think he felt trapped. However I know recliners have been successful with others.

One size doesn`t fit all so we need to adopt trial and error.
