So sorry to hear about doggy. Keeping an active dog confined for that long sounds hard.
Could you get a second crate upstairs for night time (assuming he doesn't need night time toilet trips) although it might be too much to carry him up and down.
I will speak to the vet and be advised by his opinion but I don't want to risk anything that would affect his recovery, he is only 6 years old.
I was thinking of effectively transferring him from downstairs crate to upstairs crate assuming you think you can safely carry him upstairs. We had to keep our dog away from stairs for a bit -- dislocated hip 4 years ago - not confined to a crate and we got a stairgate at top and bottom, but carried her up over night (she has always slept in our room)
