I try not to ask mum direct questions that she'll likely not know the answer to as i can see it upsets her when she can't remember. So instead of "what did you have for lunch?" I'll check the kitchen and say "Oh it looks like you had some ham for lunch" (because I can see the ham is draped over the taps etc). I think PWD often struggle with direct open-ended questions.
