My husband is 74, me 70 and we have been together for 43 years. Throughout that time he has suffered with poor mental health with a variety of 'diagnoses' and unsuccessful medications. In 2011 our own daughter suggested Asperger's (she had researched autism spectrum disorders extensively for her education degree) and this was confirmed as probable by the Autism Society. Following on, we had the best few years of our whole time together. Then in 2017 we noticed increasing problems with memory, which was diagnosed in 2018 as Alzheimer's - so unfair! In shock for many months until I found this website and in addition noticed that Memantine was keeping him fairly calm and stable, although naturally there has been some progression since. Now we have cancer thrown into the mix! He developed a tongue 'ulcer' about 5 weeks ago and was seen by a specialist yesterday, who said she is 95% sure that it is cancer. I do not know if he has taken in what was said or even remembers seeing her. How do we navigate the coming months of investigations, treatment etc. Feeling totally at sea! Oh, and I am also supporting, by phone mainly, his younger brother who is undergoing treatment for advanced bowel cancer.
