Using interviews with a group leader, volunteers, people with dementia and their partners, this film explains what Singing for the Brain is, as well as looking at the supportive and enjoyable atmosphere that makes it such a success.

'Singing for the Brain' is a service provided by Alzheimer's Society in approximately 30 locations, all of which use singing to bring people together in a friendly and stimulating social environment.

It's amazing what music can do

Music is the one form of communication which can enhance the quality of someone's life. So many people who have dementia, are able to sing, hum or just recognise a familiar tune and enjoy singing or being sung to. Stroke victims who cannot utter a complete sentence, can often sing the words to their favourite songs.
Singing for the brain looks wonderful and although many of us are not able to be a part, we can all help in some way.
I work in a care home and use music and song as the pillar of our activity work, because it is the one activity where we know there is going to be a good response.
We sing as we do armchair exercises, we hold music quizzes and invite entertainers to sing or dance for us. Music and humour combined is the greatest way to open the minds of dementia sufferers, they have a right to be entertained, to laugh in the face of their adversity and to be able to face the world with dignity. If music can do this...let's have more of it!
