My dad went into a full time care home in January this year. He is on all kinds if Meds and takes diazepam to help calm him down. He is permanently anxious and wants to rush of to unknown (unknown to us) emergencies.it is really distressing to see as he seems to be in a permanent state of anxiety. Any thoughts re his Meds as diazepam is not working?

It is so distressing to witness this and I am sorry. I had similar experiences with my husband but eventually the Consultant did find a medication that suited him - after much trial and error.

It was some years ago and I am sure there are new medications to try. However we also found that a regular dose of paracetamol did help but obviously only a doctor can decide whether this right for your husband.

I advise you to ask the Mental Health Consultant to review his medication as soon as possible.

I am sure other members would like to hear how you get on.
Best wishes

Hi my mum who is 90 has dementia for the last 6 yrs who has never been on any meds as I don't like what I read about them,so we tried Bachs flower remedys, she has the night time ones and we wouldn't be without these now.they help her to keep calm and happy mood most of the time. She still might wander about some times but it is nothing what she used to be like before we tried this ,she lives with my dad who is 84.

I saw a recent article about how many people with dementia are in some kind of pain, but they can't communicate that fact. They display difficult behaviour which is their way of coping with a continuous pain. That might be worth thinking about, perhaps trying a painkiller for a few days to see if there is any difference.

I had thought about using Bach's flower remedies but unfortunately the nursing home my mum is in aren't happy to use them in case they interact ( I know its unlikely but they have to be careful) but have you tried music. If there is a type of music that your Dad liked it is certainly worth a go. Its like flicking a switch when I put Glenn Miller on for my mum -from being a raging person who it is difficult to placate she would be dancing round the room with not a care in the world. Worth a try and no side effects. All the best

My mum is the same with music it calms her down and she will sit and kick her legs and wave her arms around.we wouldn't be without the Bach remedys when she went into hospital she started being angry and you could see the difference in her so we used to put some drops on her tounge when we used to visit her.It certainly made her happy again.

hi - my dad isn't a walker he is a shouter so has been put on trazedone as he gets very anxious with his shouting which can be non stop for hours. but that doesn't seem to be working either and they are just upping his dose again. if this doesn't work then they are going to have to change his anxiety meds.

I would definitely get a mental health specialist to review him.

whilst very hard to witness this is just the nature of the disease and my GP did say to me that my dad might not be finding it so distressing as I am...... but he might have just being saying it to make me feel better.:)

his nursing home is also trying to use music to try and calm him down and they also use audio books.

hope that helps.
