Hi, Has anyone experienced adverse personality changes in a six month period of taking Aricept 10mg ?? Specifically, becoming challenging, detached and intransigent.

Hello Tiz

I am not a doctor but there is always a possibility the changes you mention

becoming challenging, detached and intransigent.

could be due to the dementia and not the medication.

But please consult medical advice if you are concerned.

Hi Tiz (great name),

My mother-in-law has been on 10mg Aricept for about 6 months and we have noticed none of those things.

In fact, those were aspects of her condition related to dementia before she started the Aricept, which the medication has to a large degree smoothed over.

I would agree with Grannie G that this may just be the underlying dementia.

Have you notcied any improvement in any aspects of her condition since she started on Aricept? From what I have read here on Talking Point(TP), this medication does not produce the same results for everyone.

Take care,

Sandy

It wasn't the AD !!!

Dear Sandy and GG,
Thank you for your replies. Yes, I think the Aricept did help to stabilize Mum in the beginning as she was extremely confused and anxious, with no sense of time of day or routine.
(I did write a very long post with our history but it disappeared into cyber-space !)
The specialist suggested stopping the Aricept for 2 weeks to see what effect it was having. We are now into the 2nd week and the change is remarkable. Within 2 days Mum became less detached, more receptive and accessible, and a little of her former self appeared. She will now comment almost normally at times and has begun to initiate small activities. I can persuade her to do things without getting mimickry and sarcasm. She will now take some notice of what is going on around her and is less "switched off".
So what do I do now ??

Hi Tiz

Just to say, we tried my mother on Aricept and after 2 or 3 weeks I begged her doctor to take her off them! She became far more restless - up in the night, when she hadn't been before, etc etc. I guess it just doesn't agree with some people. She was then put on to resperidone - which I know is frowned on now - and stayed on that for the next 8 years.

Thanks, Lucy..I suppose it just comes down to trial and error.
Wish you all strength and patience,
