does anyone have any information or advice on getting holiday insurance for the person you care for? on trying to book a holiday privately,we were refused for insurance 6 times - one firm said if it could be guaranteed as a stable period for the person then they might look at it!not a condition we could meet!

I only know that if your hubby/wife is on tablet's to make them stable. Well, insurance is out.

If tablet free, and stable. You get insurance. Provided you tell the company EVERYTHING about any condition your spouse might have.

Dear Evergreen,

Welcome to Talking Point.

As a disabled person who always needed a letter from Doctor to leave the Country, I was able to get insurance.

My bank with the Black Horse always insured me.

Best wishes

I do know anti depressants are now an immediate `no, no` as far as holiday insurance is concerned.

Access to healthcare abroad

Whatever your reasons for going abroad, you may be entitled to medical care at reduced cost or sometimes free. Your entitlement will vary based on whether you are going to an European Economic Area country (EEA) or elsewhere in the world.http://www.nhs.uk/Healthcareabroad/Pages/Healthcareabroad.aspx

You can alway get one of those cards . One of my daughters has Epilepsy, was Just going abroad for few days , so got one of those cards . Just in case she needed treatment in the country she was in. So if you can't get holiday insurance even thought with that card it does say to top up with holiday insurance , at lest your have that card with you so there have to give you hospital treatment if you need it .

A few ideas

I just read a previous thread on this subject and somebody else also said the kept an account at their bank that they paid for monthly as it provided free travel insurance (as well as other benefits). I know Barclays doesn't have an age limit or requier heath checks.

This is the first year my dad and I has been looking into it for my mum as last year she wasn't yet on tablets. I have found this company www.karmainsurance.com who specialise in insurance - inc. travel - for those over 70 and those with pre existing conditions (or both!). I do have to stress that we haven't had a policy with them yet, my dad is debating who to go with. Has anyone tried them? They are expensive but apart from upping the excess to £250 on cancellation and curtailment claims if caused by the AD (and how many other insurers allow any cancellation claims with AD?)they seem to sound ok. May not be worth it for cheap trips but might be worth keeping in mind.

Does anyone know of any other companies we can look at?

If over 70 you have to go to the over 70 section but then under the medical underwriting it says

Declaration:
All persons to be insured confirm that either:
That They have do not have any of the conditions listed below, and that They have not been diagnosed as having any other medical conditions (listed or otherwise) or That They have only been diagnosed with one of the conditions listed below, and have not been diagnosed as having any other medical conditions (listed or otherwise).
In the last 12 months Their condition has been stable and well controlled on Their routine medication which has not had to be changed due to any worsening of Their condition.
In the last 12 months They have not had to be hospitalised or referred to a specialist for any medical condition.
They are not on any form of waiting list for treatment or tests or specialist investigation, nor are They awaiting the results of any tests or investigation.
They are not travelling against medical advice or to seek medical treatment and They will make Their own arrangements to ensure that They have an adequate supply of Their usual medication for the period of Our trip.
They are not aware of any reason why Their condition should cause Them to cancel or cut short Their trip.

Acceptable Conditions
(deleted section for ease of pasteing into post)
• Alzheimer’s Disease provided the insured in accompanied by an insured “fit” carer and subject to £250 excess for cancellation and curtailment claims arising directly from the condition.

I've tried to colour the nasty bit about having been stable for 12 months and not waiting for medical tests so hopefully that worked. I'm lucky in that at mid stage mum has been stable for that time. I do realise that those conditions do rule it out for the majority.

Thanks
Trish

and I forgot to add

also if you can't agree to those conditions you can ask for a quote to see what the premium would be in your circumstances (expensive I am guessing!).

I also found this ad (http://www.travel-insurance-guide.co.uk/pre-existing-alzheimers.asp)

Hello Evergreen and Margarita

Evergreen, try Age Concern. I used them when I went away and made a claim, they were excellent. My mother was over 70 at the time.

Margarita. What you ought to be wary about the EU health card is that it is NOT a substitute for travel insurance. From experience, what it does enable is the "smoothing of the wheels" on arrival at a hospital or clinic. However, it does not pay for repatriation - something we needed. Also, in some EU countries, health care is NOT free and so whether you have a card or not, you will still have to pay (or in our case, the insurance company did). I thought I should make this clear. The consequences of travelling without proper insurance can be at best expensive, or worst, prevent access to life saving treatment. Sorry if that sounds a bit doom-laden.
