I have just been listening to something on the radio that I thought was of interest.

They are currently trialling thirteen dogs to be assistance dogs for people with early onset dementia. There are always young dogs who were bred specifically to be guide dogs but for some reason they just do not quite fit the bill and are now being trained to see if they could take on another role.

Apparently the trial is going very well and they are looking to increase the number of dogs up to twenty. Apart from the benefits for the patient, the presence of an assistance dog may help carers in giving them a little time to themselves, time to get out and do the shopping etc.
