Hi

I had my 56th birthday a couple of weeks ago.

This week I saw the results of a brain MRI I had back in the summer.
There were cloudy spots and it said atrophy not normal for someone my age.

The neurologist made a joke that some people are just born with smaller brains {!!!!!} Then he said there was one more test which involved sticking a needle in my brain and he very quickly went on to say but you dont want that, we dont want to go diagnosing you with alzheimers at your age do we? (!!!!)
I got in a pickle at that point and so I wasnt able to assert that actually I would like a full diagnosis.

He was a movement disorder specialist that the memory clinic psychiatrist had sent me to because I have some physical parkinson like symptoms. The dementia psychiatrist thought that my memory and speech/language problems were caused by anxiety (I dont have anxiety but I get anxious around doctors). They also sent me to a neuropsychologist months ago and although he had never gotten around to sending his report to the neurologist, he had told me on the phone that I had done 'quite well' but as someone who was in Mensa at the top 1% I ought to be doing better than 'quite well'.

Now the neurologist has to track down my file (which he did not have at my appointment) , get a copy of the neuropsychologist's report before he will write a letter to the Dementia Psychiatrist at the memory clinic. God knows how long that will take.

I just always feel like no one takes me seriously. The other day I nearly put my dressing gown on to go to the shops and I then put the wrong name on a prescription form and I am waking up shouting and fisting the air or sword fighting. Every step feels like a battle again patronisization.

I would ask to see a more sympathetic neurologist angelicatoo and state as your reason, you are not happy having jokes made about your condition and would appreciate being treated with more respect.

There is no point because he has to write his report and that is all that is required of him. The memory clinic are the ones I need to take me seriously and I guess 'brain atrophy' will do that, whenever they eventually see his report.

Wow. I'm so sorry this professional was so patronising. I'm around your age and am worried about my memory. However, I do have anxiety and think this may "just be severe stress". I've had more than a few experiences with patronising professionals. You definitely deserve more respect!
