In September 2023 I moved my 73-year-old mother into the state-of-the-art Memory Care Facility just a few minutes away from my home. The facility staff called me frequently to report mother's behavior like she was a child in school misbehaving instead of supporting her through her behavior issues. In December 2023, the Director of the facility called me to say that my mother could no longer stay at the Memory Care Facility because they could not handle her! Now here it is January 2024 and my mother is living back with me. She is beyond irritated and refuses to take her medication, eat, drink, or bathe. Since returning home, she basically refuses to do anything. She has to be monitored all day because she tries to walk out any door at every opportunity she gets. Every day she sits at the bottom of the stairs until she passes out!

hi is it worth finding your mum a new place? maybe she is missing the other people and taking it out on you for what she might see as you taking her out of the last one.

Thanks for the positive support. I visited a couple of Memory Care Facilities last week. Hopefully, one will be a good fit for Mom. I truly appreciate your comments. Have a beautiful day!

Hello @Evermonkson and welcome to the Dementia Support Forum. I am so sorry to read what you are going through, it must be so difficult. You do not describe what issues your mother had whilst in the Memory Care Facility but it sounds as if they were just not geared up to deal with challenging behaviour.

The Dementia Support Forum is based in the UK and from your reference to a Memory Care Facility I am assuming that you are based in the US. Normally my advice to members who are based here in the UK would be to contact the local social services with a view to finding a specialist nursing home which deals with challenging behaviour but it do not know how thing work in the US. I have attached below a link to the Alzheimer's Association in the US and it might be a good idea to contact them for advice. When you do find somewhere that you think might be suitable make sure that you ask them what support they can give to someone with challenging behaviour.
