my mum is 63 yrs old, and im getting worried about ...the way she is acting and some things she is doing totaly out of character. she has not been diagnosed with AD, or i think she has not, as she will not talk to me much anymore. and somtimes gets agressive, toward me and my sister. she is also sending large amounts of money to sweepstake companies, they keep sending letters and she sends them what they ask for, but she just will not take the advice that she is almost certianly geting conned, this is very out of character for her...she used to save every penny. she is also getting very untidy, her house used to be spotless, now there is hardly room to move about. i tidy up , then when i go back it the same again.she is forgeting names of people, even mine, it sounds like she just could not get the word out but then she gets the name wrong, then she corrects her self. im not sure what to do,about medical help, if i suggest about it to her she will shrug it of, but i think theres something not right, she does suffer with depresstion.could it just be that and not AD. or just her getting older? can i contact her doctor, or should i speak to my own doctor. any sugestions would be helpful.

Hi Steve

thanks for posting your story here.

My own feeling is that certainly something needs to be done at several levels.

Firstly, yes, probably a word or even better a letter to her GP describing conditions, behaviours etc is a priority. Her safety and well-being is more important than the money at present. Sort the one, and the other may come into line. So first priority is to start on the road to diagnosing what is the matter, and they will of course also look at depression as a cause rather than as an effect.

But we have also had stories on here about other people sending off money to these con artists. That needs to be stopped.

Previous threads have been: http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/talkingpoint/discuss/showthread.php?t=2357&highlight=competitions

these may provide some help in stopping it.
