My sister in law had scabies, flea's and bed sores. So, yes expect these things. Sorry to be annoyed, but should we not talk about this stuff.

I'm just catching up on your thread...so sorry to read that John has caught MRSA. It can be treated however, especially if caught early enough. My gramps had it in hospital, and he got treated and got rid of it as well. Took a while, but it worked anyway.
Hope things will soon be looking up again for you both. Take care.

Sorry to hear such bad news. I guess that might explain why it has taken so long to heal. Fingers crossed that an early diagnosis will mean a speedy recovery.

Just to reinforce the previous post. My mum has been in and out of hospital for the past year and a half. Somehow she got the MRSA bug which appeared about 3 months ago on both her legs.
She had the district nurse come twice each day to dress them. Then the tissue specialist nurse came and recommended the same honey etc treatment. The legs have now healed up very well, although the skin is still tight and reddish.
She has had to wait all this time for a cateract operation and for the stitches to be taken out from a previous cataract operation on her other eye. The stitches have been rather painful and pricky and should have come out long ago, but the MRSA stopped all that.
She has just had her second clear swab takenne more clear swab and she can, at last, have her long awaited second op. So 'nil desperandum' - it can be cured xx TinaT

I know very little about MRSA, but I'm sure those 4 little letters were a bombshell.
I hope you can take heart from others with personal experience that with the right care it can be treated successfully.

Thank you so much for all the messages of support. Sorry I disappeared last night, I just had to get my head together. (Not feeling the least bit philosophical!)
Tina, thank you for that, it does sound to be a similar situation, and it gives me hope.
Unfortunately CN was not on duty yesterday pm, I'd have liked to talk it through with him. Hopefully today!
I don't blame the home, apparently we are almost all carriers of MRSA, and it doesn't do any harm. It's only when there is an open wound and a depressed immune system that problems arise, which is why people often are infected after an operation. What worries me is that John has been on almost constant antibiotics since August, so I don't know how effective they are now.
I'll report back when I know more.

Ufortunately MRSA is becoming more prevalent in the community..which is why GP's are being urged not to prescribe antibiotics as routinely as before for those of us who are deemed fit enough to fight infection ourselves.
Unfortunately John does not fall into that category..but take heart!!
It can be treated..I think Vancomycin is one one the drugs available..and there may be topical treatment ,too. It may take his foot a little longer to heal..the CN at the home sounds on the ball..I'm sure they'll sort it.
Tina mentioned honey..apparently Manuka Honey is wonderful..on wounds and if John could eat some daily..it's expensive but worth a try. Our local Tesco sells it...it comes in varying strengths-you need to buy the maximum strength one.

Gigi, thanks for reminding me about manuka honey. I read your post before I went out, and called at Tesco on my way. They had every kind if honey but manuka. I'll have to wait and go to the health food store on Monday.
Apparently they don't treat on one infected swab now! They're going to take another one tomorrow evening to send off on Monday morning, and if it's still infected, he should get treatment. If not, I'll be very proactive!

You know how I feel for you both, Hazel.. I feel your frustration.
How is John in himself, does this infection make his agitation worse like the other ones?

No, he's very calm. He hasn't had much in the way of myoclonic jerks since he had his seizure, very little agitation, and he's quite responsive when he's awake (at meal times). In fact today one of the carers made him laugh out loud, the first time I've heard that for ages.
If I hadn't been told, I wouldn't know he had an infection.
I've just had to ring no 1 son and warn him not to bring Guy tomorrow.
