interesting drug reads like an extra strength aricept.
Is it available in this country?certainly not on prescription as it has not been approved by NICE.
It would be interesting to know the cost if it were available,I recall paying £140 monthly (from a pharmacist friend IT WAS MORE EXPENSIVE ELSWHERE) before Aricept was available on the NHS!

Alternative drugs

Just had a quick search on the net - this substance , like any other, may have nasty side effects in some people - and in US they are saying best to give only under medical supervision -would be interesting for 'our' own scientists to comment on this.

I will ask for you and see if someone from QRD (the Alzheimer's Society research programme ) can post on this forum.

Hello all
Huperzine is a natural cholinesterase inhibitor (Aricept, etc. are artificial or 'man' made cholinesterase inhibitors. It is thought to be quite powerful as a cholinesterase inhibitor and so the side effects could be much stronger than Aricept. It definitely should not be used if you are using another cholinesterase inhibitor and it's best to seek advice from your doctor before trying it - 'natural' doesn't necessarily mean there are no risks.

Generally it's much more expensive to buy Huperzine than it is to pay for a private prescription for Aricept although, unlike Aricept, you don't need a prescription to get it.

now im confused again.

My Mums specialst's secretary said that the specialst nad no problems with her taking it and I asked her about side effects and she said he didnt have a problem with me getting it for her. still taking or stopping the aricept wasnt mentioned at all in the disscussion. I think Ill have to phone again.

anyway on a supply note I emailed a compnay called natures plus and they make huperzine RX Brain and thier uk rep emailed me last night and today I phoned one of their outlets/stockists in Liverpool and she has said she will get if for me but as its coming from the states I will have to wait a couple of weeks.

heres the email I was sent this morning.

Hi Iain,

Your nearest stockists are:

. Abaca, 255 Woolton Road, Childwall, L16

. Formby Health Store, 66 Brows Lane, Formby, L37

. The Granary, 1 Grange Road, West Kirby, L48

If any of the above do not stock Huperzine i am sure they would be more than happy to get some in for you. You should expect to pay no more that £9.95.

We also have a large stockists in Nottingham who offers both on-line sales and mail order. They offer a fast and efficient service and would be able to mail it to you if this is more convenient:
