Hello

I just wnated to re-iterate good hand hygiene which is being lost as the news and other debates take over.

I have seen people walking round with gloves on in supermarkets, walking from shelf to shelf with the same gloves on, pay at the checkout with the same gloves on, touch their faces and personal items with the same gloves on and get into their cars with the same gloves on. Wearing gloves in this way is the same as not wearing gloves! Gloves are for single use, single task and then should be removed and disposed of correctly.

I can't post a recent video by a colleague on here (who has looked at the evidence on transmission), but the single most important thing anyone can do is to WASH THEIR HANDS -as this is the main mode of transmission and the best way of protecting yourselves and your loved ones as well as social distancing and isolation measures.

Stay safe -wash your hands;)

Same with masks - even if you have the correct type of mask, you must have very good hand hygiene and not be touching the mask and be extremely careful when putting it on, taking it off - something we have yet to master in the general population.

Interesting watching a virologist on the TV yesterday who said that the average face mask being used by the public (that is, not the specialised ones like the NHS front line staff will hopefully all be getting) are effectively next to useless.

He explained that once the inside of the mask becomes damp from your breath, the material can no longer block the microscopic droplets that could be carrying any virus:eek:.

Thats correct. The problem is that there is little evidence on the efficacy of surgical face masks and people need to weigh up the pro's and con's for themselves. I unfortunately don't have the time to go in depth about this, but here is a paper that offers some evidence by experimenting with surgical face masks (the kind you describe):

And a simpler article for those who want an easy read:

We all know how hard it is to find sanitizers in the shops at the moment and I would only use it if I was out somewhere. However, when I was picking up a script at the pharmacy this morning, the chemist slipped a bottle of sanitizer that they had made in the shop in with my medications. There was no charge and just something they were doing for their regulars. It was such a great idea.
