My mum has been struggling with her memory since August, we have visited our gp , had a ct scan and referred to memory clinic last December, still no appointment, we are so upset and frustrated by this, is this normal level of wait

Welcome to the forum @MarisH.

I’m so sorry to hear about the difficulties you’re facing.

I live in Scotland and I’m not sure what is the usual waiting time elsewhere in the UK. That seems an outrageous amount of time to wait. Is there any way that contacting your GP to see if they can help hurry this along?

We went to our Doctor last September and they did blood tests and said they would do a referral to the Memory Clinic. Instead we received a referral to Geriatric Medicine. The Doctor had no idea why we had been referred to him and obviously neither did we! He did send Mum for a CT scan the results of which we got in a letter in February but still no referral to the Memory Clinic. I totally feel your frustration. I hope you get somewhere soon.

This does sound a long time. My mum was referred by our GP in February last year and got an appointment with the memory service at the end of July. We're in the Midlands. This wait was very difficult to cope with. I contacted the Service a couple of times when things got worse but was also told that we just had to wait our turn, which eventually came and mum is now receiving treatment. Hang on in there. You will find this forum very helpful.

It’s absolutely crazy, our gp admits it’s diabolical but says there is nothing she can do. Thank you , I hope you do as well

I just took my Dad to his memory clinic appointment. It was around a month or two wait for it but only because I pushed it with the GP several times (he was rejected from his first referral due to a head trauma he had even though I expressed that dementia symptoms had been showing at least a year before this). Once there, and chatting with the staff they were talking about how understaffed they've been for so long and now only getting more on top of the waiting lists. Hopefully you'll get the appointment through soon!

Hi

I posted in dec 2021 about waiting for an appointment for Dad to have a lumbar puncture and memory tests. Both were done in the early spring and we have just had an appointment with the neurologist this week only to go on for more tests to rule out something called NPH or rule it in. He had had an MRI and a full scan of his spine prior to this and various other clinics initially saying it was depression/low mood but we kept pressing the doctors etc. All we really know is that Dad has mild cognitive impairment which is the closest anyone has got to actually saying this could be dementia. I can't think straight myself today about it all. Feels like no-one actually believes you sometimes and as for asking the person with memory problems if they think they have a memory problem well, I don't understand that either since Dad says he is fine for his age thanks for asking lol. The only thing he really admits too is his walking isn't very good some days or that he doesn't know what is going on with his mind. Best wishes to you xxx

Thank You. It does feel frustrating. Perhaps it varies around the country. We are in the North but Dad's nearest hospital refers to our hospital as it has all the specialism and facilities there. He had tests at a different hospital. How people manage on their own I will never know. We were initially told it was 30 weeks to see a neurologist and to be fair it was slightly quicker as they had extra clinics on after covid but I anticipate another wait now of between 6 and 8 weeks and then a wait for the procedure itself and then another 6-8 weeks for results and another appointment so that takes us to probably late summer or early Autumn ?with a bit of good luck . Take care xx
