My dad has vascular dementia. He has had several TIA’s the last few months following a major stroke 18 years ago from which he recovered except for a flaccid arm and right hand. He could work for the therapists in rehab 6 weeks ago, but now sleeps at home the past 10 days all night and most of the day -even when eating, which he has always enjoyed so much. I am tempted to just keep feeding him all day to give him more energy. He takes vitamins, which I crush along with all his meds given in applesauce, but just can’t really hold his head up very long now -after doing so well a month ago with in home health. Now he seems powerless to stay alert to watch television. I don’t know if this means He is at the end. He could play dominoes well until this recent dozing constantly stage. I don’t know if I should ask for a Hospice interview or not

Hello @Caringdaughter1 and welcome.
Have you had your dad checked by a doctor, just to be sure there is nothing else going on, like an infection?
LadyA

Thank you so much for your response. I have had him Checked by His general practitioner, and a stroke dr neurologist. They have both indicated this is normal for later stage. I will pursue today with the dementia specialist today though. I have witnessed the confusion state in the past with bacterial infections (UTI ‘s) and we have experienced the moaning that accompanies that. This is just dropsy sleeping constantly while upright, but that is a very good suggestion that it might possibly be something else.. thank you again for your input !!! I look forward to the input and support this group may have to offer !!

It would not let me reply to your post to me LadyA. Not sure why ????

Ask your doctor's surgery to send a district nurse to come and assess his care needs and advise you on how best to feed and care for him. He may need energy feeds to top up his nutrition and fluids. He may also need a semi reclined position to tilt his head back.
