Hi Rhoda

My experience of financial assessment for the purpose of day care/respite care may be of interest to you. The SW who came to carry out the assessment was only interested in Mary's finances, all savings were in my name and they were ignored and only half of our joint current account was taken into consideration. Mary has a modest state pension which was not taken into account and she is now entitled to free day care/respite and it is my understanding that this will apply should she require a full time place in a NH.

I was completely honest with the SW and offered details of my savings but I was assured that they could not be taken into account and only Mary's financial situation was relevant. I would add that we are married but I understand that marital status is not relevant. Have I been lucky with the SW or is this the correct application of the regulations?

Good luck Rhoda
