This is a selfish, self interested question -

I've booked an expensive holiday but realise that most / all travel insurance companys don't cover cancellation due to illnesses that are known about before the holiday is booked. In view of the often long duration of AD, does anyone know of any specialist travel insurers who will provide cancellation cover for relatives of people with AD?

Travel insurance

Hi Cheryl, I'm new to this forum, in fact I've registered specifically so that I can answer your question as I have recently faced a similar situation. My mother has advanced Alzheimer's and my husband, daughter and I are about to go on holiday to Australia. We also were concerned about the insurance situation. We have an annual policy with Direct Travel, and decided to tell them about my mother's condition when we renewed the policy in April. They made a note of it, but said that, if we had not received any medical advice that a crisis in my mother's health was imminent, then we were covered. They did not raise the premium for this. Not that the recovering insurance would be exactly top of our list if a crisis occurred, but it's reassuring to know that our premiums are not being paid in vain. Hope this helps.

Maus.

Thank you Maus, will try direct travel. I also registered today - to ask the question. Thanks for registering just to answer. I know it would be the least of my worries, but I also need to consider the other person who's travelling with me.

hi cheryls ...... it's NOT selfish to take a holiday or to want to have cancellation protected by insurance. I do hope you're able to take and enjoy the holiday.

best wishes

As Maus has said, you should tell your insurers and then they hopefully will cover you should you need to return home, although hopefully you won't I think that with some insurers you can also specify when you take out a policy that you have a relative in poor health and as long as it has been disclosed you should be OK.

Incidentally, my son recently went to Spain with a friend. He has type 1 diabetes so can't buy 'off the peg' travel insurance as this wouldn't cover his diabetes. He also spent 3 days of his holiday in hospital last year and I thought this would make it difficult to get cover. I got a policy through Direct Travel Insurance which cost about £5 more than the 'off the peg' policy. They said that if he hadn't been in hospital so recently he would have just had to pay the standard price.

Check what's covered

I had to return from South America last year when MIL died suddenly. We'd had only 5 days of what should have been a 23 day holiday, we only got a minimal payout on our travel insurance on the grounds that we had used the flights which was a major cost of the holiday ( although they did cover the additional money we had to pay to change our flights on our return).

Another policy covered loss but not damage,to an expensive watch on another holiday ( we were too honest I suppose) and our household insurance covers major items like video cameras etc when out of the house for any purpose including holidays. So no need to pay insurance costs twice over.( Actually I was just wondering whether it covered the watch.....)

Welcome to you new TPers
