Transfer to a new home

I'm new here but I have gained great comfort and wisdom from following the threads.
My mother is 90 in a NH and is self funding. She doesn't realise she has dementia or why she needs to be looked after. For a variety of reasons we are at the point of thinking about transferring her to a home nearer me or my sister. She is also getting nearer needing to be in a more specialised unit.
My question is how do you get round paying fees for two homes. If we give notice to the place she is in at present too soon she will be without care, if we leave it till a place becomes available at another home we will be paying what seems to be a wasted £3K as nearly all homes seem to have a month's notice policy. In a way I wish the home she is in at present would say that it is no longer suitable. How have others coped with this predicament?
Many thanks

Can I ask why you are thinking about moving your mum? If it's because the home is not able to care for your mum's needs, or because there are problems with her care, I would speak with the manager. They may agree that they are struggling to meet her needs and be prepared to consider a shorter notice period.

Or the new home may be prepared to accept a lesser fee to 'hold' the room during the notice period. You might ask when viewing proposed care homes what they would normally do.

Is the present NH rang by a group company? If so and they also own another home close to where you would like her to move I am sure they would do a transfer. Not sure how it works otherwise as not come across this before but interested on reading replies :).

Thanks for your reply. The reason we are considering moving my mother is that the one thing that has been keeping her in her area which is a long way from both my sister and I is her church she is now refusing to go with the kind volunteers who come quite a distance to pick her up. She is also very restless and wants to be doing something the whole time which the home can not do all the time. The several nursing homes (9) we have visited all refuse to give any leeway.
Many thanks

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought of that - I will look into it.
