An admission from dad

Hi everyone,
just an update on dad.He has been to the G.P today and did a mini mnetal test on him.He was unaware like i said that this was going to take place.Mum was called in afterwards and the G.P told her that he had admitted he was having problems.Of course mum got upset. The G.P is asking a specialist in this field to visit dad at home as she knows he would probably not go to an appointment.I at least feel relieved that things are now being done for dad and am very very proud of him for taking the first step and admitting his problem.I think mum feels a bit overcome at the thought of dad maybe having this horrible disease but like me relieved somethings being done. Thanks for all your support.elainex

I am so pleased that your Dad was honest enough to admit to having a problem....it took courage, I should think.

It will be better once you know exactly what is wrong, at least then you can decide a plan of action.

Not knowing is somehow worse.

Hi Elaine, well done to your dad for admitting that he had problems, well done to an understanding GP, and especially well done to you for putting the wheels in motion.

Let's hope you get a diagnosis now, and some help for your mum.

Love,

Dear Elaine,

So pleased your dad was able to speak to the GP. Your mother is naturally upset and feeling protective towards him, but she won`t be able to help him unless he is ready to be helped.

Love xx

thanks Kathleen.Mums still a bit upset.have just spoken to my sister and she is over the moon dads admitted it.My next task should i choose to accept it is to get mum a walk in shower fitted.poor thing got stuck in the bath for an hour.dropped her mobile in it trying to ring us.Don't know why family ring me to sort these things I'm the youngest of four!maybe its coz i can be a bit gobby!and am reluctant to take no for an answer.Only joking i think its because i work in a care home and know the right people to call.Love alinex and thanks for thinking of us today.

Elaine,

Im glad that your Dad has admitted that he is having problems. Well done! My Dad is convinced there is nothing wrong with him and it's the rest of us including the doctors that have the problems. Some days I think he might be right. It sounds like your Dad's GP has done wonders. My Dad saw the consultant at home and it was so much better than taking my Dad (and my Mum) to the memory clinic where there are big signs saying 'MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES'.

Well I am taking him to the rugby tonight, too much to ask you to shout for Wigan Elaine? ;) :D

Elaine, I think you need to talk to your consultant. I think he's more likely to be prepared to give you a private prescription than your GP. But you need to be very firm.

I asked our consultant for a private prescription for Ebixa for John, and insisted that if he wouldn't give me one I'd get the pills from somewhere. He agreed to prescribe them on the NHS!

Worth a shot!

I do intend to get dad the aricept no matter what.I have seen changes in people who are on it in my line of work.I will insist if it comes to it.I can be a very persuasive person,a trait gained through working with our beloved elderly.just hope it doesn't come to that.thanks again elainex

Hi everyone,
Just a quick question.Has anyone found that children being around alzheimer sufferrers stimulates them?Mum and dad had my 6 year old today,at mum's request why i was working. My son knows that grandad is not well and seems to understand the reason for the repetitivness etc.I went to pick him up to find himself, dad and mum crying with laughter at old holiday photos and generally having a reminiscing time.Wonderful to see.I think i will start a memory book with dad.Just wondered if kids do stimulate them.love elainex

Our neighbour has just been prescribed Aricept - and she cannot be more advanced than my hubby who is probably 7 - 10 yrs down the line. She still lives alone with some propping up by friends and neighbours. Still dresses herself etc.

Our consultant seems to do her own thing and was happy to prescribe. I think if you really push it you can get it on the NHS (NICE only give guidelines and consultants can still do what they think is right).

Hope you can get Aricept and then I hope it works.

It sounds as if you have a very sensitive little 6 year old there elaine. How lovely that he can give your father pleasure.

I hope they both have a lot more happy times together.
