The Energy Crisis - The Government has forgotten Care Home Residents.

Seems every household is getting £400 come October and those with more than one property will get more, but to qualify you have to pay your energy bill direct so this leaves pensioners and others in care homes with no help at all. Mum's monthly bill went up £350 per month taking it to over £4600 a month in April due mostly to the cost of energy at the home and yet the Government seems to have forgotten this. I haven't heard any mainstream media mentioning this fact. Not only do self funders pay a care premium in their council tax for years that they never benefit from, but now they are not getting any help with the energy crisis. Wholly unfair but not sure there is anything we can do about it?!

I think people of pension age are getting an increased heating allowance as well as the money linked to property. Not that that would help with the massive increase in care home cost. I feel the home must have very poor energy saving if their costs have gone up by £350 per person per month. However I take your point that care homes are inevitably going to increase fees with no help for those not receiving a pension.

I don't think it's just energy, but that's the bulk. Staff are getting a raise, which is good if it's the actual care staff rather than managers, homes had to pay for their PPE, other inflation increases, so you do expect yearly rises but energy has increased it more than the norm. Just seems harsh on those vulnerable people who have to sell their homes to fund their care then get no help towards those rising bills because the companies pay the energy bills direct, if you see what I mean!

How can one persons energy consumption increase by £350 per month? thats hideous amount.
Have you challenged them?
People with oil fired /solid fuel central heating wont get it either, nor those on Bottled gas

here are a few benefits care home residents cn claim - are they claiming everything they should.

My partner is disabled, so we live in a 3bed bungalow. It has a bigger footprint than our neighbours 4 bed house. we are an E for council tax, they are a D . They got a rebate we didnt. Unfair.

Should someone in a one bed flat get the same £400 as someone living in a 4 bed detached? Seemingly so.

It is so unfair. People with two homes will get more too I understand. I’ve not been advised of care home increase, yet, but know it’s coming! Our home is heated by oil and an open fire. We have a syndicate to try to get cheaper oil but the quote we got last week was and eye watering 200% increase from oil ordered in January/ February. Time to get blankets out of the cupboard.

Also feel sorry for those in low paid unemployment, was speaking to one of the male carers at my husbandcare home. He has two children , his wife works part time and he is talking of buying electric blankets to keep them warm. I was also shocked to realise that all of the workers in the home bring in packed lunch etc as they are not provided with food! So wrong.

The letter from the home states the increase is partially due to inflation, unexpected costs such as huge increase in cost and usage of PPE, specialist cleaning equipment and materials, minimum 5% increase in staff pay, price increases in food, drinks, cleaning and laundry products, day care, gas and electric. Care homes are businesses after all I guess. Went up last year to £990 per week and now to £1075 per week. What do you do though? It's not my money it's mums so do families make a fuss when prices increase? We aren't accountants so I guess we just have to bite the bullet. Mum gets attendance allowance but that's it.

My gas and electric was £100 for this month "but" I used 193 units of electric compared to 354 this time last year and 10 units of gas compared to 46 so my bill was cheaper last year despite using a lot more then., So I can imagine care homes use an incredible amount with cooking, washing and heating for over 30 residents, and of course they are kept warm. I would probably be more horrified if mum was dressed in a coat and a woolly hat with the place freezing! I've written to Rishi Sunak but won't hold my breath for a reply!

Re you not getting a rebate it's worth contacting your council as some are doing local schemes for some outside the A-D bands but it's not been advertised nationally so it's worth asking.
