Taps

I wonder if anyone has any experience with specialised taps (e.g. what worked or what was an absolute waste of money).

Taps that turn off after a certain period, rather than risk them being left on overnight. I think they are called "self closing taps". We've seen them in a lot of public toilets and think that fitting them in the house may stop an accident waiting to happen.

We are just trying to check out the best options before a plumber starts rubbing his hands together in preparation for an estimate.

We've looked around the net, but would rather go on recommendations:

Will keep you informed if we get any information.

Cheers

Dear Charlie,

I'd be really grateful for any information that you can find out or if anyone has information to share here.

My father has flooded the bathroom once and the kitchen on two occasions. Okay, it gets the floors cleaned, but........

Not such a problem in the kitchen, since it's tiled. Why DO people insist on having carpet in the bathrooms? I suppose it's warmer, but it makes a hell of a mess when it's flooded.

Dear Jude,
At least the carpet managed to soak up a fair amount before it all came pouring through the light fitting into the kitchen below .... aaargh! Not just an accident waiting to happen, rather a large-scale disaster.
I, too, will be interested in recommendations!

Technology and dementia care Conference

There is a one day conference on Technology and dementia care in Birmingham on October 6th. A little truimph is that our local council is funding my attendance - as a 'carers representative' - YES ! It is a conference for professionals but - hey! - I thought some users and carers should be there too .

Alzheimer's Society will be there with a branch from West Kent showing how computers are being used by people who have dementia.

Will, hopefully, have lots to post on Resources section after OCt 6th.

My soapbox is - there is a lot of assistive technology out there but we dont have easy access to it. Why arent Occupational Therapists installing special taps that turn off when water level reaches a certai point in the bath etc etc along with grab rails and walk in showers for physically disabled. Its all about enabling people to stay independent for longer - why is so little done for people who have cognitive disability? End of soapbox.

Dear Chris,

I shan't be able to make it to Birmingham sadly. I shall be very interested to hear your reports though. There will be a load of people from TP on the soapbox with you, I'm sure.

Best wishes,

Jude

Hi Kriss,

Thanks so much. And please accept my apologies for taking a dig at plumbers and estimates - like all professions, most are honest and you only hear the bad stories .... :) .....

No offence taken Charlie - he's probably the biggest critic of the many "cowboys" who are out there and give the profession such a bad name!

Type of tap you need is called "Timeflow" some makes call them non- concussive.

Main makes are Bristontan, Meynell, Pegler, Rada, and Swan.

Best are probably Briston and Pegler.

Pegler allows 2 or 30 second delay.

Prices start from Swan £39.50 + vat (pair) - cheap & cheerful?
Rada £70.25 per tap
Pegler £51.93 per tap (2 seconds) £58 (30 secs)

no make as far as we can tell make sink or bath taps only basin. Reason beiing time and effort holding them while bath fills etc.All these prices are trade/cost so you can expect a mark up.

As for fitting all jobs are different, eg old basin/taps with red lead putty or plaster - there is a danger basin can break getting taps out.

Timewise - depends again - at least an hour for 2 taps.

You are best not to approach "specialists eg bathroom specialists" they charge a lot and are likely to be failed plumbers. Word of mouth recommendations are best.

Good luck

Bath taps that prevent a flood

The taps described below have been designed and fitted into the Gloucester Smart House & work well. they are not in production yet - but hopefully will be soon. sorry its not mcuh hlep now - but just to let you know there are researchers out there working for us!

If you have any problems where a technological solution may be found - let BIME know (thats Bath Institute of Medical Engineering http://www.bath.ac.uk/bime/aboutus.htm - founder was Sir Barnes Wallis - designed the R100 airship - not the fated R101 ! and bouncing bombs)

"The bath monitor is for people with dementia who leave the bath or basin taps running and then forget about them. The system comprises two modified taps, a level sensor, flow valves and a central control box. Use of the taps is monitored by the control box, which can then vary the water flow using the valves. If the control box determines that the taps have been left running for too long, or the level sensor indicates that too much water is in the bath or basin, the valves can be shut off to prevent a flood.
The taps look and feel like normal taps, and following an intervention by the electronics, they remain usable without requiring an external reset.
A company has expressed interest in producing the taps for the domestic house market, and is costing the manufacture of the device in the far east."

Dear Chris,

Thanks for this really interesting post. Fancy there being so much information available about a little thing like a tap. Brilliant really. By the way, let's hope the manufacturer isn't Indonesian because the taps will self-destruct in 15 minutes!

Bath & Sink plugs that prevent floods

About

Magiplug®

See www.magiplug.com for photos (cant seem to cut & paste photos from websites ????). Also no prices of these wonderful little plugs - need to email company I think.

Magiplug is a unique little device that allows the bath to be filled only to a specific level.
Ever left a bath running only to return to find a flooded bathroom?
The water damage caused by an overflowing bath can be extensive and costly.

Sometimes taking months to completely dry out,

Not to mention the damage to the rooms below.

Magiplug®

Is considered by many to be the best little plug in the world because of its unique features.
It prevents your bath from flooding over and causing water damage to your property.
It works using a pressure-activated system.

When an unattended bath reaches a certain depth the pressure plate opens and releases the excess water
safely down the waste exit or plughole prior to flooding, this level will be maintained until the taps are turned off.
When the desired level is reached the pressure plate will close again leaving you a filled bath.

Magiplug®

Is available in a wide range of colours: including Chrome and gold.

With the increased pressure on the plug as the bath fills, the unique mechanism opens
and allows the water to flow away maintaining a constant level.
Which means you never need to worry about thousands of pounds in damage as a result of an overflowing bath.

Magiplug®

NOW WITH A BRAND NEW DESIGN

Making Magiplug even more streamline

Also with a great safety feature, "COLOURTHERM" the plug will change colour according to the water temperature.

Colourtherm is an amazing material that tells the user when the water is dangerously hot,

By changing colour at about 32 - 41 degrees C
This is a fantastic breakthrough in safety features and combined with its anti-flood mechanism
Magiplug is a unique dual-purpose safety device that no self respecting property owner should be without.

Just a thought this "tap" business is within an an OT remit.
Has anyone enquired at their SS department about OT supplying?
Might be worth aquestion
