Antibiotics are not freely prescribed here anymore, the brakes were put on that about 10 years ago. At one time though they were over prescribed. Over the past 30 years dad has had many antibiotics prescribed. He was told by a specialist back in 1977 after surviving Bacterial Endocarditis that if he felt a cold coming on to get antibiotics straight away. His now GP of 5 years will only prescribe them if a infection is present.

This morning the specialist talked with dad and said to him that he felt it was necessary to investigate the tear in his oesophagus he felt waiting any longer wasn't to his benefit. After explaining all the risks involved he asked dad for his consent to explore this tear on Friday....it will mean Anaesthetic. Dad agreed.

The Dr's have just about exhausted all tests trying to find the source of dad's infection it seems the key is to pin point the infection. If they can't find it....it wont be for want of trying. When I left dad he was on his way to have the Pic Line reinserted. The blood and iron transfusions have given dad a well needed boost.

There is so much to be learnt here on TP from others and their experiences and I do appreciate the advise, caring thoughts Link Sites and Support. Regards, Taffy.

Hi Taffy

I;m glad your dad is a bit stronger after his transfusions. Hopefully this will give him the strength to cope with the operation. The doctors do seem to be giving him the best treatment possible.

I'll be thinking about you both on Friday, don't forget to let us know.

Love,

Thanks Hazel, everything is going as planned providing dad doesn't have any set backs.

Friday should shed more light on things. They are definitely doing a lot for dad....physio everyday....also some sort of milk supplement daily.

Take Care, Love Taffy.

Hello Taffy.
I`m so glad your father is getting good care. It`s as much as you can ask for really.
At least you don`t have any complaints there, even though his condition is causing so much concern.
Fingers crossed for Friday.
Love xx

Dear Sylvia,

Dad is getting really good care and I know it's only because he is on a TPI pension and the Veterans Department pay all the hospital costs. Someone else in the same situation I'm sure would not be so fortunate.

I found out today that the procedure will be carried out at another hospital. The ambulance will take him first thing in the morning and all well, he will be returned that night. I hope so as the other hospital is much further away.

Dad is improving but his mental health isn't good. Nursing staff told me today he was very paranoid.... I asked to make sure that they were giving him is anti psychotic meds and they are.....dad is so paranoid and suspicious of all staff members. He is convinced they are trying to harm him but thinks he is one step ahead of them. Crazy Crazy Crazy.... to everyone but him.

If it's not one thing it's another, this has manifested over the pasted four days and I said to the charge nurse that I just hope that what happened the last time (dad receiving the skin tears) doesn't happen again. I can only live in hope that it doesn't.

Tomorrow they are also doing a TOE...??? the nurse said it was a Oesophageal Echo....it's to rule out infective endocarditis. I will post with the outcome. Love Taffy.

There is so much wrong with him Taffy, I don`t know how he is existing.
The paranoia is upsetting to say the least. Upsetting for your father and upsetting for you too. You know how hard everyone is trying for him and he is unable to see it.
Make sure you look after yourself. This constant worry must be taking it`s toll.
Love xx

I agree Sylvia, where dad gets his strength to carry on I truly don't know.

Dad went down as planned to the other hospital he was prepared for the procedure seen by two specialist then a little later one returned and told him that his op had been cancelled. The specialist continued to say that they will review him in a month.

They were not prepared to take the risk. Why the hell this hadn't being discussed prior is beyond me or maybe it was and with seeing dad it was decided against. When dad eventually returned to the local hospital three Dr's from the team came and apologised they were also disappointed. Dad told them to RACK OFF.

Saturday, one Dr returned and dad had settled down, he told dad that Wednesday the gastroenterologist has booked him for theatre the nurse told me they were doing a scope to investigate the tear. Apparently dad's platelets are all over the place and if that will have any bearing on Wednesday I don't know.... as today, dad's nose started dripping small drops of blood it didn't last any great length of time. The nurse said it was due to his platelets being low.

I'll post the outcome, Love Taffy.

Dad told them to RACK OFF.

I don't blame him, Taffy. It must have been exhausting for him, all the kerfuffle of preparation and travel, and all for nothing.

Your poor dad. And poor you, it must be so stressful for you, watching him having to go through all this.

Love and prayers for you and your dad,

Up Date

Dad had his scopes done last Wednesday. The specialist was pleased as the tear was healing and so tomorrow dad was to go back to the other hospital to have the TOE test done.

Good Friday, dad's specialist was in the ward and stopped by. I was there and he said things were looking promising and there was a light at the end of the tunnel and told me about the TOE test and it's importance to him.

Monday, dad went into septic shock and had a heart attack. Things are not looking good for him and even though the family all think he wont survive I can see that fighting spirit he always has. The hospital phoned me at 6am this morning and despite them giving a blood transfusion last night his HB was even lower.

I went straight away and not long got home from the hospital. The staff assured me that if there is any change they'll phone me right away. I spoke with three doctors throughout the day and they just said, all we can do is wait until tomorrow and see what it brings, we'll keep him comfortable and palliative care has being written up.

I have read many posts here where love ones are at death's door and rallied around. My head tells me.... how the hell could he pull through but my hearts tell me, he is a fighter and has beat the odds before. Regards Taffy.

Dear Taffy

This is such a worrying time for you. It's awful, waiting for the phone call, hoping it won't come, jumping every time it rings.

Your poor dad has been through so much, and you've been through so much with him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Love,

Thank you all for your support,

Dad's condition remains the same and tomorrow the team treating him will have a conference with the lead specialist. Dad is on 4hourly morphine injections and two lots of sedation when needed.

Dad is extremely agitated and when the sedation wears off he has to be sedated again. The Dr was on the ward this afternoon and witnessed dad's distress so now the sedation has been strengthened. In dads agitated state it is beyond me where he gets the energy to struggle the way he does and his plea's for help can be heard all over the ward. So very distressing and I can't even imagine the distress dad is feeling.

Dad now also has the E coli bacteria and along with his renal deterioration the toxin build up is what is causing the agitation. The Dr's said that they'll keep him comfortable and the rest is up to him. Regards, Taffy.

Dear Taffy,
It sounds as if both you and your father are tortured. There is nothing more distressing than witnessing such agitation and not being able to help.
I`m so sorry.

Dear Taffy

I'm so sorry. Your poor dad has so many problems now, it's difficult to understand how he is surviving them. He must be so strong.

It must be agony for you to see him in such torture. I do hope they manage to keep him comfortable.

Love and prayers for you all,

Dear Taffy
It must be agonisng for you, I am so sorry. Seeing Dad in this state, well unless you've been there... When Dad became very ill, I watched the confusion, the agitation, and it was like everything happened in slow motion. I was witnessing a diabetic collapse and crash. I remember the terrible feeling of helplessness... The doctors are doing everything thing they can Taffy. Have you other family to support you at this moment?
take care
hendy
