Speedy discharge from assessment ward

Hi

Just before Christmas it was agreed that my dad and I should look for an EMI nursing home for my mum. She is currently on an assessment ward.
We went and looked at the four local homes pre Christmas and at the beginning of Jan the social worker put my mum's name down on a list, saying that it was likely to be about three months before she would be placed as there was a waiting list.

Yesterday afternoon the assessment ward rang my dad and told him that the home had assessed my mum on Tuesday, a social services panel had met to agree funding on Wednesday and that they would be moving her this Monday.

Am I right in thinking this is unreasonable?- if we'd had a week's notice we could have personalised her room, had a chat to the manager about her care plan etc etc - just done things properly! I live a few hours drive away, so its not like I can just nip round at a minute's notice and sort things. I've called the consultant to ask for a few day's grace but he hasn't come back yet. How far can I press for some leeway?

Hello Steph,

I don`t really think you have cause for complaint. You have found a home, the room is there and you`ve been given the weekend to prepare it.

From what I`ve read about assessment wards, I`dhave thought you`d be relieved to get your mother into her new home as quickly as possible. And also from what I`ve been led to believe, the bed shortage would warrant this haste.

I know it`s not ideal, it would have been much easier having time to make the preparations you would have liked to have made. I wish you luck in getting a later date and hope your mother settles well into her new home.

Take care xx

I too only got a weeks warning. This was even before a Finanial Assessment was done, cost was known. As i at the moment can't work this put money worries on me and made my condition worse. I still haven't been notified of the cost. I might not have enough money to pay the backdated fees, but its not my fault i was put in the position.I still have the household bills to pay.I have been trying to contact a TV supplier as its in my husbands name to get the package reduced but been told as its in his name he has to do it !!!! I have said i have the POA but was told it can only be in one name !!!!! Anybody got any help one that one. Gas, electric and phone are now in my name no problem, as i have found out thats something else i've had to do.

Hi Steph

All I can say is be thankful that you got this in so fast. Some people can wait months and months until the budget becomes available and block beds.

Mum was self funding and we viewed homes at the weekend, advised the hospital SW on Monday which home we had chosen and Mum was discharged to the home on the Tuesday pm. My brother had to take the Tuesday morning off to take in stuff from Mum's house.

I was so pleased that they took her as her real recovery started once she got to the NH. The hospital was awful.

Good luck to you and your family

Thanks for that

The ward is excellent though, a specialist place with a large sensory garden and lots a really good staff. The home is bleaker I think. My grandmother died there with Alzheimers 5 years ago, but there aren't many other places near Dad. I just hope my mum doesn't recognise the place!

Dear Kay.

Oh now I understand your reluctance. What a shame. I do hope it works out for you and your mother doesn`t remember.

Love xx

Dear Kay

My husband has recently moved to an EMI home from hospital. I think you'll find there's plenty of time. I went in on the morning of the day John was to be transferred and took all his things in. The home made the handiman available to me for the morning to put up pictures, install electrics, etc. John was transferred at lunch time, and I was there to greet him when he arrived.

The care plan was not drawn up in advance. The head of the unit went through the essentials with me that afternoon, and the rest was completed, a few pages at a time, over the next month as they got to know him and his needs. I was involved in everything, and it's constantly being reviewed.

I do hope your fears are groundless, and the transfer goes as well as ours did. Let us know.
