So, what’s my Pauline been up to today?

Yesterday it was decided that we should visit some the family graves Pauline has tended all of her life almost and, as can be imagined, it was a struggle in the heat but after an hour and half and totally shattered we were home for tea. After we had eaten and Ignoring advise as it was still very warm and close. off Pauline toddled insisting on doing ‘her’ walk but returned within minutes a bit distressed as too hot and then spent a while complaint about the heat. This morning of course after being kept awake by the thunderstorms the litany is changed to “does it ever stop raining, I want to go for a walk,” ah well at least she is still fit enough.

The walking has become a bit of an obsession with her but a good one in most ways, like when its not raining or windy or cold as the complaints then are constant. The marvellous thing is how proud she is telling everyone with half an ear of ‘her walk’ and how often she does it. Sods law is that I have a damaged tendon and cant go far not even around her walk and that too she is telling everyone ?

This morning Pauline was in a grumpy, moaning about everything mood and was not happy to hear that I was going for a walk with my brother bur off I went and we completed over 2.5 miles which is good for me. However, when I got home I was met by a tirade of accusations about taking my brother on long walks but never her! The thing is she has a crumbling vertebrae at base of her spine and I know how that can kick off so much prefer to keep her to short walks but if this mood continues I may be tempted to take her on a longer walk than usual, not sure.

Hi Agzy glad the tendon is better, and you enjoyed your walk with your brother. Sympathise entirely with the ‘can’t get it right’ , feeling but you need time on your own too. If you had taken her that would probably have been a fault too when she’s in that mood if she’s like my other half. Today he is not well, had temperature all night and we are waiting for the nurse to call back this afternoon. Funny how dementia seems to lead to so many infections. Hope this week going better for you.

Thank you @Knitandpurl , I have taken to wearing the walking boots I used for off track rambles and added ankle support has made a big difference. As for Pauline I took her on an extended walk from her usual and she proudly completed just over a mile but since then it has bee grumbles about rough pavements and scruffy streets and so doesn’t like it and is sticking to ‘her’ walk and yesterday she completed 3 circuits of it. Dont know where the energy is coming from but better obsessing about walking than eating chocolate I suppose ?

Aaghh. Just come back from hospital review and not only extending my use of antibiotics (1,500ml per day) but am informed that it is they that are causing tendinitis and I must take great care as can be very damaging indeed to muscles etc. What next?

After Wednesdays consultation with a brain specialist after my recent Lower Skull Osteomyelitis struggles I had a telephone call from my consultant today and he has given me the green light to take a holiday in the sun providing I take sensible precautions and use factor 50+ sunblock and no swimming because of my Palsy eye. My good news has rather upset Pauline as she doesn’t want me to go away even for 7 nights but I seriously need a break.

just booked a 7 night cruise along with my kid brother (minder) , from Corfu around Greek islands. Ok, I wont be allowed to swim and sunbathing will be under a blanket but with loads of factor50+ I can stroll the ruins and frequent the bars and dining halls and just chill. Pauline is not really happy and even fearful but her eldest and my youngest are sure they can look after her, after all they had to while I was in hospital ?.

Go for it Agzy. Will do you a world of good. Hopefully the kids will get her to do some different things while you’re away and take loads of photos that she can show you when you get back. I find my other half isn’t really interested in anything anyone else does, I don’t think they can take it in . And he hates me going out even for an hour, his daughter has said she will come and spend a day on her own with him to let me have day to myself, he adores her, so you’d think he’d be delighted, but no, he’s very suspicious.! Go end enjoy sunny Greece. ?

Paulines middle son who rarely visits but phones most weekends phoned yesterday to say they were flying off to Turkey(?) and she was full of praise for him saying that, “he deserved and needed a break.” This just minutes after having a right go at me for leaving her alone just so I can ‘live it up with my brother on a cruise’. I have explained it is no different than me being in hospital which she understands one minute and not the next but I know that, like her son, “I deserve and need a break,” and this was a bargain not to be missed.

Today has been a funny sort of disaster as, quite early on Pauline was talking about getting the bus to Liverpool and her favourite store which she doesn’t realise has closed down. So, to keep her happy and pass the time I agreed especially as the bus stops right outside our house. Sun was shining so Pauline just had a cardigan over her top and I wore just a polo shirt which was a big mistake as the wind coming off the river and up Church Street was freezing and the sun had disappeared. Given this it was straight into M&S where she didnt really want to go but a toilet call decided it and in we went. When we got back home (it was too cold and windy to traipse around any more shops) we were replete having had scones along with tea/coffee and she was the proud possessor of two new nighties and all done with loads of laughs and enjoyment as we shopped. A morning I wasnt looking forward to but one I enjoyed, priceless!

This morning and as usual, we were both up early and of course the washing machine went on as Pauline insists it must be every morning. However, once it was on she announced she was off on “her” walk, which is just over half of a mile long and is now done three times a day. More often or not we do it together And so we did today And she almost jogged her way around it. When we first did this walk she ended up in agony with her ‘bad back’ and insisted it was too far and yet now she can outstrip me I think. If only we could recover memory loss as well as she has recovered the physical loss she suffered earlier this year when I was more or less teaching her how to walk again. ?

It’s amazing how this dementia constantly changes isn’t it. Last week OH wasn’t good at all, though getting over UTI, yesterday we had Sunday lunch out with my son and he did fantastic, held up his end of the conversation, collected his food himself, didn’t need any of it cut up, ate well! Last week he was chasing his food round the plate unable to get it on the utensils! I think you’ve done fantastic with the walking, which must be helping in all sorts of ways, think we just have to hold on to the good things. Hope you both have a good week.

You are so right @Knitandpurl , she is so positive and proud when doing ‘her walk’ yet can’t accept that a morning walking around a retail park like this morning, especially the bit in panic mode searching for store with a loo, is the same distance or further.
